Lanka Education And Research Network, National Research and Educational Network (NREN) of Sri Lanka

Lanka Education And Research Network is the NREN (National Research and Education Network) of Sri Lanka, which interconnects Educational and Research institutions across the country, and provide network related services to them. A National Research and Education Network (NREN) is usually a specialized Internet Service Provider dedicated to supporting the needs of the research and education communi

ties within a country and it is distinguished by support for a high-speed backbone network, often offering dedicated channels for individual research projects. We currently interconnect all of the UGC funded state universities, a number of public universities under other ministries, the University Grants Commission, the Ministry of Higher Education, and a number of national research institutions including the National Science Foundation (NSF). Our network is an advanced network supporting IPv6 and multicast. It currently includes optical fiber links ranging from 500Mbps to 5Mbps to most campuses. At present our international connectivity include a 10Gbps bandwidth to the commodity Internet and a 5Gbps link to Singapore that connects the academic/research Internet through the TEIN4 network, SingAREN, Internet2 and Google. We also have direct connections to SchoolNet, the network connecting secondary schools and Local Government Network (LGN), the network connecting government institutions in Sri Lanka.

Reflecting on LEARN36, held in October 2025 — a milestone gathering that brought together our community to review progress, strengthen partnerships, and shape the next phase of LEARN’s journey.

LEARN36 | Day 2 Highlights

Day 2 of LEARN36 featured the LEARN General Assembly, the event's most significant component, bringing together member institutions and stakeholders to review progress, discuss, and collectively reflect on LEARN’s direction and priorities.

The programme commenced with the welcome speech by Pro Roshan Ragel, CEO of LEARN, followed by the opening remarks by Prof. Wasantha Kumara, Chairman of LEARN. This was followed by key segments of the General Assembly proceedings.

The day also featured the Service Awareness Session, which highlighted LEARN’s core services and ongoing initiatives, and the official web launch of the AI Literacy for All initiative. The programme included a keynote address by Dr. Veerachai Tanpipat (ThaiREN) and a presentation on LEARN Today and Tomorrow by Dr. Asitha Bandaranayake, Chief Technology Officer of LEARN. The programme also featured a presentation by Dr. Sureka Thiruchittampalam from IEEE Sri Lanka Section/GRSS Sri Lanka Chapter.

The event was honoured by an address by the Chief Guest, Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy. A special discussion was also held between the Hon. Deputy Minister and LEARN leadership, including the Chairman, CEO, and CTO, focusing on future collaboration and national digital initiatives.

Working Group sessions were conducted in parallel, and at the conclusion of the day, Working Group members presented summaries of their activities and outcomes from the two-day Working Group programme.

The day concluded with the release of the LEARN Newsletter, a token of appreciation, and a group photo session.
LEARN36 Day 2 was held at Galle Face Hotel, with the generous support of Sri Lanka Telecom PLC, Dialog Broadband Networks, Inflow Technologies Singapore Pte Ltd, and IEE Sri Lanka Section / GRSS Sri Lanka Chapter.

LEARN36 | Day 1 Highlights

Day 1 of LEARN36 featured dedicated Working Group sessions on Generative AI for Productivity and AI for Agricultural Technology, held at Hilton Residences Colombo, with the participation of over 50 academics from across the country, actively engaged in LEARN Working Groups.
The sessions enabled constructive discussions, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, helping shape practical ideas and outcomes that were further consolidated across the two-day programme.

🚨 LEARN Status Update

🌏 Expanding GenAI Capacity Across the Asia-Pacific

As part of the AP-GAINED+ initiative, a regional Training of Trainers Workshop was held from 13–15 August 2025 in Vientiane, Laos, bringing together participants from Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Funded by the Asi@Connect project and coordinated by LEARN, the program aims to create a community of certified GenAI trainers, empowering National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) to lead local AI adoption in academia and research.

Participants explored core GenAI concepts, ethical considerations, prompt engineering, solution design, and training facilitation across 12 core modules.

This workshop marks another milestone in building an inclusive, regional movement for applied AI literacy.
