The recent decision by the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to reduce the cost of electricity meters, simplify the replacement of stolen or damaged meters, accelerate new customer connections, and respond promptly to customers' technical issues is a commendable step in the right direction.
These measures have the potential to significantly reduce electricity theft, as many consumers are willing to legally obtain and recharge their own meters. However, the bureaucratic delays and administrative obstacles associated with acquiring or replacing meters have often discouraged compliance and inadvertently contributed to the rise in power theft.
To achieve the intended results, these reforms must not only be introduced but also implemented in an effective, efficient, transparent, and customer-friendly manner. Making electricity services more accessible and responsive will encourage greater public cooperation, improve revenue collection, and strengthen the sustainability of Liberia's power sector.
