Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD; education should be more than earning a degree. It should prepare us to build Africa. 🎓🌍

At The Millie Investment Group, we are working to make studying abroad more accessible and convenient by connecting African students and professionals to international education opportunities, including affordable, quality programs in Türkiye 🇹🇷.

A few months ago, while consulting with an investor involved in tire production for the Chinese market, we encouraged him to consider establishing a manufacturing facility in Liberia. 🇱🇷🏭

Our argument was simple: Liberia produces rubber. Why should we continue exporting the raw material only to import finished rubber products? Why not manufacture more of them here?

His response stayed with me.

Beyond the challenge of reliable electricity, he pointed to Liberia’s limited pool of skilled technical labor.

Establishing a factory would potentially require importing much of the specialized workforce needed to operate it; making the investment more difficult to sustain locally.

That conversation represents a much bigger challenge for Liberia and Africa.

If Africa wants to move from consumption to production, from exporting raw materials to adding value, and from importing finished products to manufacturing them, then we must deliberately build the human capital required to make that transition possible.

We need more Africans studying engineering, manufacturing, technology, agriculture, energy, data science, logistics, industrial management, artificial intelligence, healthcare, finance, research and other skills that solve the problems our economies actually face.

Going to university should not simply be about earning a degree and joining the queue for a white-collar job. Education should equip us to solve problems, build industries, create businesses, innovate, employ others and compete globally.

Study abroad if the opportunity comes but bring back knowledge, skills, networks and ideas that can help transform home.

Africa has the resources. 🌍
Africa has the people.
We must develop the skills to turn what we have into what we need.
