⭐️⭐️GOLD MINERAL⭐️⭐️

🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆

Gold (Au) is a naturally occurring metallic element belonging to the periodic table's transition metal group. It is a highly dense, soft, and malleable metal with excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation. Gold has a distinctive yellow 🌟color and high reflectivity, making it valuable for various industrial, economic, and ornamental purposes. It is known as one of the most valued metals in human history. Some uses include investment assets (currency), jewelry, technology, electronics, medicine, electricity, and aerospace applications.

🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆
of Liberia’s Gold Deposits and Geological Context
Liberia's 🇱🇷 gold deposits are largely associated with Archean and Paleoproterozoic terranes, particularly the Birimian series, which spans approximately 36% of the country. These geological formations have undergone significant orogenic processes, creating favorable conditions for gold mineralization. Liberia’s geological setting provides substantial potential for both large-scale commercial mining and small-scale artisanal operations, making gold a critical component of the country’s mining economy (A review of the mineral potential of Liberia - ScienceDirect).

🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆
Types of Gold Deposits in Liberia
✅ Archean Greenstone Belt Deposits:
Gold is commonly found in greenstone belt lithologies within Archean-aged rocks. These deposits include quartz veins, breccia zones, and disseminated mineralization, often extending 10-20 meters wide and over a kilometer in strike length.

✅ Hydrothermal and Orogenic Gold Deposits: Hydrothermal fluids moving through faults and shear zones have resulted in gold-rich quartz-carbonate veins within metamorphic rocks. Most of Liberia’s gold deposits are classified as orogenic, formed due to continental collisions and crustal deformation.

✅ Placer and Alluvial Deposits:
Extensive weathering and erosion of primary gold sources have generated placer (secondary) gold deposits in riverbeds and floodplains. These have been a key target for artisanal miners who extract gold using simple, traditional mining methods.

🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆
Occurrence and Major Deposits in Liberia
There is a long history of artisanal gold mining in Liberia from alluvial placers, with production peaking at more than 30,000 oz per annum in the 1940s. Between 2010 and 2015, annual production was estimated at 18,500 oz per annum (BGS, 2017). Nearly 600 gold occurrences were recorded by the USGS in Liberia, with gold placer deposits accounting for almost 80% of the total (Wahl, 2007). Gold remains the focus of most mineral exploration activity in Liberia today, with current licenses widely distributed over both the Archean and Proterozoic terranes, focused on major regional shear zones and belts of known alluvial gold.

picture below shows the gold potential of Liberia 🇱🇷

🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆
Historical Gold Mines in Liberia
✅ The Mining Company of Liberia (1869):
Established by Liberians following explorer Benjamin J.K. Anderson's return from the interior. This company was granted a concession in the same year, marking one of the earliest organized mining efforts in the country.

✅ Union Mining Company (1881): The Mining Company of Liberia transformed into the Union Mining Company, an English-owned entity that operated alongside sixteen Liberians, including several government officials. This period marked the beginning of more structured mining operations in Liberia.

✅ Gondoja-Ndablama District (1970s): Identified as one of the most productive gold districts in western Liberia during the 1970s, contributing notably to the country's economy before the civil wars.

✅ Kongba Community Gold Mines Ltd. (1970s):
Located in Gbarpolu County, this company operated during the 1970s in one of Liberia's productive gold districts.

🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆🔆
Gold-Rich Regions and Significant Deposits
✅ Grand Cape Mount County: Home to the New Liberty Gold Mine, Liberia's first and largest commercial gold mine, operated by Avesoro Resources. The company encompasses 5 mining sites, with 4 open pits, 6 underground mines, and a large processing plant.
▪️Underground Operations: 3,291,926 t @ 3.08 Au, delivering 326 Koz.

▪️HL Stockpile for Operational Continuity: 4,824,001 t @ 0.45 Au.
▪️Process Plant Feed: 4,054,664 t @ 2.95 Au.
▪️Recovery Rate: 94.39%.
▪️Total Gold Production: 363,407 ounces – an all-time record!

✅ Sinoe County: Location of the Dugbe Gold Project, one of the largest gold projects in the country, comprising the Tuzon and Dugbe F gold deposits. Spanning 2,559 km², this open-pit mining project is under development by Pasofino Gold Limited.
✅ Gbarpolu County: Known for its fertile gold mining areas, including the Gondoja-Ndablama belt, an emerging gold district with promising mineralization.
✅ B**g County: Site of the Kokoya Gold Mine, a small-scale commercial mine operated by MNG Gold.
✅ Lofa County: Hosts historical artisanal mining sites with ongoing exploration activities.

Iron ore is an important sedimentary rock 🪨 (or mineral) from which metallic iron is extracted. Notable types of minerals found in iron ore are hematite, magnetite, goethite, and limonite. Iron ore is the most-used metal, essential for the production of steel, which is used in the manufacturing of automobiles 🚗 , ships⛴ , tools🪓🛠, and iron rods used for the construction of buildings 🏠, bridges 🌉, and roads.

✳️✳️✳️
?
The most plausible explanation for the formation of iron ore deposits in different localities across the world is attributed to the Great Oxidizing Event occurring during the Proterozoic era (2.5 billion to 500 million years ago), hence Precambrian rocks (of Archean-Proterozoic age) are a notable source of most iron ore deposits worldwide.
The Great oxidizing event resulted in photosynthetic organisms releasing oxygen which combined with the abundant dissolved iron to produce the sedimentary iron ore.

✳️✳️✳️

The ebola pandemic of 2014 contributed to the sharp decline in iron ore prices in 2015 (👀 see photo). Price began to recover gradually from 2016 (post ebola) and peaked in 2021 before a gradual decline up to 2025. 2023 World production figures by Investing News Network, reveal the top producers of iron ore globally:
Australia: 960 million tonnes per annual (mtpa)
Brazil: 440 mtpa
China: 280 mtpa
India: 270 mtpa
Russia: 88 mtpa

Liberia is ranked among the top 25 global iron ore producers with approximately 4.8 mtpa. The country is expected to become a top 15 global producer soon with Arcelor Mittal poised to increase annual production to 15mtpa. Ongoing projects by China Union and Western Cluster, in B**g and Bomi respectively, are expected to further boost Liberia’s production figure.

✳️✳️✳️
🇱🇷
Liberia has been a historical and significant producer of iron ore globally. Liberia was Africa’s top iron ore producer by 1965, with four ongoing mining projects accounting for an annual production of 15 million metric tonnes of iron (Swindell, 1965, 1967). Production gradually increased up to 20 million metric tonnes annually by 1980 before a significant decline due to the Liberian civil war which led to the closure of major mining projects (Wright, 1986; Gunn et al, 2018).

Most of the iron ore deposits in Liberia are Banded Iron Formation (BIF) located in the central and western parts of Liberia (👀 see map for major iron ore projects and occurrences in Liberia). Currently, there are three ongoing mining projects: Arcelor Mittal Liberia in Yekepa, Nimba, Western Cluster in Bomi, and China Union in B**g.

Total estimate of Iron ore resources in Liberia exceeds 3 billion metric tonnes indicating the country’s significance globally (👀 see photo of mineral resource estimates).

“Did you know that all rocks are made up of minerals? But what exactly are minerals and why
are they important? Let’s dive into that briefly below!😊

✅ A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic, solid with a definite chemical composition and a
highly ordered atomic arrangement, often forming crystalline structures.

Key Characteristics of Minerals:

✅Naturally Occurring: Minerals are formed by natural geological processes.

✅Inorganic: Minerals are not derived from living organisms (plants or animals).

✅Solid: Minerals are solid substances. With the exception of Mercury (classified as the only liquid mineral)

✅Definite Chemical Composition: Each mineral has a specific chemical formula or a range of
compositions.

✅Ordered Atomic Arrangement/Crystalline Structures: The atoms within a mineral are
arranged in a specific, repeating pattern, which leads to their characteristic crystal structures.

Examples of some common minerals and their uses:

✅Quartz – Used in glassmaking and electronics.
✅Feldspar – A key component in ceramics and glass.
✅Calcite - is found in limestone and is essential for cement production.
✅Hematite & Magnetite – Sources of iron for steelmaking.
✅Gold - used in making jewelry, electronics, currency and medical applications (dentistry, cancer treatment, etc)
✅Diamond & Graphite – Diamonds are used in jewelry making, construction, minor industrial applications, and surgeries. Graphite is used in stationery, lubricants, industries, or nuclear reactors.

Why do Minerals Matter?

✅ Earth minerals are crucial for society’s survival, serving as vital components in everything from
infrastructure and technology to our daily lives and health, etc. We need minerals to make cars, computers, appliances, concrete roads, houses, tractors, fertilizer, electrical transmission lines,
and jewelry. Without mineral resources, the industry would collapse and living standards would
plummet.

What are some minerals prevalent in Liberia?

✅ The major mineral resources in Liberia are: Iron ore, Gold, and Diamond. However, there are indications of other minerals present in Liberia such as Bauxite, Manganese, Zinc, Lead, Tin, Phosphates, Copper, Rare earth minerals, Nickel, Molybdenum, Beach sand (zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite), Kyanite, etc.

What’s your favourite mineral, and why? Drop a comment below! Please feel free to ask a question also. 😊
