Morena Mohlomi famously said, “morena ke morena ka sechaba”. In that simple truth lies a powerful reminder: no individual becomes whole, successful, or impactful in isolation. Our humanity is completed through others, through the presence and influence of a community.
Community plays a vital role in helping us thrive. It acts as a multiplier where the combined effort, support, input and energy of many becomes far more powerful than anything one person could achieve alone.
Building a community around yourself and your business shapes your identity; it surrounds you with people who are aligned with your values and invested in your growth. These are people who amplify your impact, who carry your message further, who are willing to walk the distance with you and who contribute to your journey in meaningful ways. When one person within a community succeeds, it creates a snowball effect, opening doors and uplifting others along the way. The success of one becomes fuel for the success of many. It becomes a testament to what’s possible.
Within a community, people are inspired by one another, not through competition, but through a kind of healthy peer pressure that raises standards. Observing how others move, build, innovate and improve encourages each individual to do better. Feedback, whether spoken or unspoken, pushes everyone toward excellence. It holds people accountable and shapes identity over time, aligning individuals and businesses with shared values.
Communities also serve as powerful pools of resources. They provide access to knowledge, experience, networks, frameworks and tools that would otherwise take years to acquire alone. Within a community, someone has likely walked the path you’re on, and can offer guidance, support, or even collaboration. In this way, communities become a shortcut to impact, enabling people to achieve more, faster, and at a higher standard.
In many ways, building something meaningful is like constructing a house; no single person brings all the materials or all the skills needed. It takes different hands, different strengths, and a shared vision to bring it to life. And just like Morena Mohlomi said, we stand, we grow, and we succeed because of the humanity of others.
Motho ke motho ka batho.
