A much anticipated development

The addition of an AI data centre positions Lesotho to enter Africa’s growing digital economy, though specific details of the centre are yet to be disclosed.

Currently, Lesotho is reliant on electricity imports, but Project Kobong could generate surplus power for export to South Africa and other nations.

Lesotho signed a $6.2 billion agreement with US-based Convalt Energy to build a 1,200 MW hydropower plant and an AI data centre.

The deal is expected to be the largest foreign direct investment in Lesotho’s history, aiming to turn the country into a regional power exporter.

Community Resource Exchange (CRE) Collaboration Grants
Direct grant for African community-led human rights initiatives

This is a direct grant opportunity where your NGO can submit a proposal. The focus is on human rights protection in the context of international investments and development projects.

Deadline: May 7, 2026

Grant Amount: Up to USD $5,000 (maximum 8-month project)

Location: Lesotho is explicitly eligible

Sector: Gender & Human Rights

Eligibility: Community-based groups and local organizations in Africa

Option 1: Complete the Collaboration Grant Request Form online on the Coalition for Human Rights in Development website
