Join the Basotho Enterprises Development Corporation (BEDCO) for the official launch of the -Business Idea Pitching -IDEA JAM Project, an initiative aimed at improving access to funding for MSMEs in Lesotho.

The Business Idea Pitching (BIP) project is coming to address the ongoing challenge of limited access to funding for Micro and Small Enterprises in Lesotho, despite their important contribution to economic growth, innovation, and job creation.

Many businesses continue to struggle to expand due to financial constraints, while limited support from financial institutions and the absence of a development bank make it difficult for start-ups and small businesses to access loans.

In response, BIP introduces a business-expansion pitching initiative aimed at supporting active micro and small enterprises owned by individuals aged 21โ€“59 who may not qualify for traditional business competitions or formal financing opportunities.

The initiative will provide small grants with flexible and achievable requirements, allowing entrepreneurs to explain their business challenges and demonstrate how funding support can improve and grow their operations.

The Business Idea Pitching (BIP) initiative will be open to Basotho-owned businesses operating within the four priority sectors identified in the National Strategic Development Plan:

Mr. Tseliso Kolisang, founder and director of Mabatho Farms located in Ha-Tsolo, is among the young entrepreneurs benefiting from the BEP, a youth empowerment initiative funded by Standard Lesotho Bank(SLB), Revenue Services Lesotho(RSL), and Basotho Enterprise Development Corporation - BEDCO

Mabatho Farms specializes in pig farming and currently produces between 180kg and 200kg per month, while steadily expanding its customer base.

Before receiving support through the BEP, Mabatho Farms operated on a smaller scale with:

* Only 2 permanent employees
* Limited resources and a small market reach
* Inadequate infrastructure for expansion
* Low production capacity and fewer business opportunities

Although the business had ambitions to grow, it lacked the financial capacity to improve infrastructure, increase production, and access larger markets.

๐๐„๐ ๐…๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐’๐ฎ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ

Through a funding injection of M200,000.00, Mabatho Farms was able to:

* Purchase a business site at Ha Penapena and construct a 20m x 10m piggery housing structure
* Expanded operational capacity at Ha-Tsolo by increasing open piggery structures from 3 to 7 units.
* Improve farm management systems and business documentation
* Increase production and strengthen supply channels

The business now supplies two butcheries and two restaurants, and has grown its workforce to 3 permanent employees while maintaining 2 temporary workers.

Mabatho Farms is positioning itself for long-term sustainability and growth. Upon completion of the piggery housing structure, the business aims to breed 10 sows to further increase production capacity.

The growth of Mabatho Farms demonstrates how strategic funding and entrepreneurship support can transform small enterprises into thriving businesses that contribute to local economic development and job creation in Lesotho.
