Watch: From Knowledge to Action: Advancing Access and Benefit-Sharing in Lesotho

Four days of learning, dialogue, and practical training brought together communities, field assessors, traditional authorities, and local enterprises to strengthen the sustainable use and conservation of Lesotho’s biological resources.

From FPIC and community governance to ecological assessment, economic valuation, enterprise development, and value addition, the workshop is helping build a more inclusive biocultural economy where communities can play a greater role in protecting and benefiting from Lesotho’s biodiversity.

Day 1 | Advancing Access and Benefit-Sharing in Lesotho 🇱🇸

Today marked the first day of a four-day capacity-building workshop under Lesotho’s Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) Project, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNDP and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

The training focused on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), the Nagoya Protocol and community participation, equipping local committees, traditional authorities and conservation stakeholders with knowledge to engage in decisions around Lesotho’s indigenous biological and genetic resources.

Participants also explored Biocultural Community Protocols (BCPs) and Grievance Redress Mechanisms (GRMs) to strengthen community rights, protect traditional knowledge and promote more equitable sharing of benefits from the sustainable use of biodiversity.

As we close out African Women's Month, we are privileged to work alongside many outstanding women whose achievements continue to inspire us. Today, we would like to celebrate and congratulate Mme Mapheello Nkopane on her appointment as Director of Elections for IEC Lesotho.

Her appointment is not only a significant personal achievement, but also a reminder of the important role women play in strengthening democratic institutions and public trust. As she prepares to take on this important national responsibility, we celebrate this milestone and wish her every success in her new role.

We had the opportunity to sit with Mme Mapheello and ask her to reflect on her journey. Find out what she shared here: https://go.undp.org/GjW

On Thursday, 27th August at Avani Maseru, we had the privilege of formally introducing HRH Princess Senate Seeiso as the UNDP National Goodwill Ambassador for Equality and Sustainable Development in Lesotho.

The occasion was marked by speeches from our Resident Representative, Dr Jacqueline Olweya; the Honourable Limpho Tau, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations; the Honourable Lady Justice Nthomeng Majara, Deputy Prime Minister; Her Royal Highness herself; and beneficiaries whom Her Royal Highness had met along the journey leading up to this announcement — a strong reminder of the communities whose voices this ambassadorship aims to amplify.

Bringing together government, the royal family, partners, and community members, the event marked the beginning of Her Royal Highness' tenure as our National Goodwill Ambassador, and the start of an exciting new chapter for UNDP Lesotho.
