Custom ABS-FR0 Electrical Enclosure Manufactured Using FDM 3D Printing

Not every 3D printed part is a prototype.

This project demonstrates how engineering-grade flame-retardant materials can be used to manufacture functional electrical enclosures for real-world applications.

The enclosure was produced using ABS-FR0 material and features:

✅ Flame-retardant engineering plastic.
✅ Brass threaded inserts for durable assembly.
✅ DIN rail mounting system.
✅ Suitable for low-volume production.
✅ Rapid customization without expensive tooling.

For specialized industrial and electrical applications, FDM 3D printing can be a practical alternative when flexibility, fast development, and low production quantities are required.

Only one thing changed — moisture. The difference?

Left: printed straight from vacuum packaging. Right: dried 12h at 70°C. Result:

• Stringing vs clean geometry.
• Rough vs smooth surface.
• Unstable vs consistent extrusion.

Conclusion: drying is not optional for PA6-CF materials.

These three ABS materials look similar — but behave very differently.

• ABS → general-purpose, easy to print.
• ABS-FR (V0) → flame-retardant, safer for electronics.
• ABS-CF → stiff, strong, but more demanding.

Choosing the wrong one can cost you time, money, and failed prints.

🔧 Main differences:

• ABS = balanced and forgiving.
• ABS-FR = safety-focused.
• ABS-CF = structural performance.

This lightweight but tough part was printed from PC-CF15 – a chemically resistant, carbon-fiber reinforced polycarbonate designed for demanding environments.
Here it’s used as a coolant transfer component, where elevated temperature, pressure and aggressive fluids.

It may look like a small, light black, tube, but if it stops working – the whole system gets hot under the collar. 😄 Sometimes the tiniest part has the biggest responsibility.
