We use the word feedback almost every day in organizations. Give feedback. Ask for feedback. Receive feedback. Build a feedback culture. Celebrate feedback. Survive feedback.

But have you ever stopped and asked yourself: What does this word actually mean? And is it even the right word for human-to-human communication?

Let me challenge a popular — and often superficial — organizational obsession.

1. The annual cycle — and the emotional landscape behind it
Every year, as we approach the end of December, many of my clients bring similar themes into coaching. They prepare for their evaluation conversations (as leaders and as someone else’s direct reports), reflect on the results achieved, and begin thinking about the year ahead. What they share is almost always the same: a mixture of anticipation, uncertainty, pride, doubt, and the desire to show up well — not only for their managers but also for their own direct reports.

All of this reveals something important: performance is constantly on people’s minds, but the system that is supposed to shape performance is rarely deeply understood. (...)

How important it is to use the right words...

I hear daily that people in organizations use “team” and “group” as if they were interchangeable, as if the difference were only stylistic or a matter of semantics. But it is not.

I have worked with global organizations for many years, across multiple levels: global leadership teams, clusters, regions, countries, and local departments. One thing has been consistently evident in my experience. At the global and cluster levels, people are rarely intentionally malicious, incompetent, or disconnected from reality. On the contrary—most are highly capable, committed professionals who genuinely want the organization to succeed. They operate under intense pressure to standardize, scale, manage risk, and deliver results across very different markets, cultures, and regulatory environments. (...)

Crisis is not a problem to solve, but a passage to cross — a liminal space where meaning breaks down and vertical growth becomes possible.

I write this because so many of my clients — and myself — have faced crises that felt unbearable. And yet, again and again, I see that what feels like collapse can also be the very path of transformation. Crisis is not an exception to life, but its teacher (...)

We would like to thank the organizers of the Būtent! Festival for a wonderful event – and, of course, for the beautiful weather, which they also seem to have managed to organize.
A big thank you to Dainius and his colleagues for nurturing the idea and organizing everything so smoothly, and to the ICF Lithuania board (Gerda, Loreta, Aleksandra, Sonata, and Rimvydas) for encouraging us to join and helping us participate.
It was a real treat to meet our former training participants – to hug, chat, and share impressions. We were also happy to share our thoughts on human inner dialogues based on the results of research conducted by Leda Turai and insights into adult maturity (vertical growth), its role and obstacles in identity formation and the performance of certain roles (e.g., leadership). For both of us, Rimas and Leda, it was a fun and engaging experience to lead activities and moderate discussions with participants in the open air.
It was especially nice to hear that people left our experiential sessions with a deeper understanding, thought-provoking questions, useful insights, and even specific ideas about what to apply in their lives and work and how.
Thank you to everyone who was there – such meetings inspire and remind us why we do what we do.

Coaching can sound fashionable; the real thing is quieter and deeper. It’s reduced to solution-oriented talk and agreed action steps or a handful of techniques. And yet—even after many years of coaching—I keep finding new nuances for growth. ICF continually updates its competencies as the prof...

Dreams have always intrigued me. Some of them fade quickly, but others stay with us for years because they feel powerful, meaningful, or even life-changing. In my own experience, and the stories I have heard from others, dreams sometimes provide clarity, direction, or creativity that cannot be explained simply as memory replay or fantasy. (...)
