Welcome to visit and collect.
Laura Tuča (curator of the exhibition): - How do you perceive time?
Mary Zhang: - Time used to accompany me with anxiety and disappointment for many years. Now, I've become less sensitive to it. I remember when I was 13 and got into a prestigious school in Beijing. Many of my classmates have become prominent figures in science, politics, industry, and engineering. My parents gave me a mechanical watch as a gift, and its ticking always reminded me of the passing time. Unlike others who studied hard, I often found myself calculating how much of my life had passed. In that environment, discussing death was considered ridiculous. I was also restricted from freely drawing as it was seen as a waste of time. Therefore, I pursued a career as an architect in the first half of my life. Now, I want to return to my artistic roots and live each day as an artist.
Laura Tuča: - Why you feel obliged to do as much in art as you can? You mention that, of course, that before age of 45 you concentrate on ( lets call it ) values of society and you did not fulfill, in your opinion, things you could do in art. What do you aim to achieve in art? What do you want to express through your art?
Mary Zhang: - Pessimism haunted me for forty years like a tumor. Now, back in the art world, it feels like it's been removed. I now prefer to express a hint of happiness and represent the natural state of things. My motto now is "Life is short, chase your dreams." It has two meanings: life is short, and we should focus on joyful moments and not have regrets. Secondly, I want to spend my remaining years using my talents to create and explore art, broadening my horizons and combating the negative effects of aging. My art is simple and clear, conveying genuine emotions and love.
