sits closer to the North Pole than to Oslo. At nearly 78° north, is home to the world’s northernmost airport with scheduled commercial flights - a place where the sun stays above the horizon for months at a time and Arctic conditions shape almost every aspect of aviation.

Longyearbyen Airport (ENSB) is a Level 3 slot-coordinated airport with specific requirements for operators flying there. These include Norway’s CAA-approved winter training for flight crews, additional operational procedures and risk assessments, as well as advance submission of documentation demonstrating compliance with Norway’s CAA requirements. A landing permission is also required for non-scheduled flights to and from Svalbard.

Clearway recently handled the arrangements and provided full flight support for one such operation: a Challenger 605 operated by Panaviatic, an Estonian charter operator, flying from London to Svalbard. The arrangements covered everything from flight planning and landing permits for both Norway and the UK to fuel, airport slots and ground handling services.

Svalbard may be connected to mainland Norway by scheduled service but for non-scheduled flights it remains a distinctly High Arctic operation, one where preparation on the ground matters just as much as the flying.
