Can a city be ruined by over-tourism?

I believe so, and Rome is a prominent example of it.

So much beauty, history, and architectural heritage, yet it’s almost impossible to truly immerse yourself in that experience when there are thousands of people trying to do the exact same thing as you.

Having daily tourist quotas? Charging large amounts of money like Bhutan does? I don’t have a concrete answer to this problem, but the current situation just doesn’t feel sustainable.

In July 2021 I got to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, the largest N**i German concentration and extermination camp, where over 1.1 million men, women, and children (primarily Jews), were slaughtered, making it the most significant symbol of the Holocaust and genocide my people have experienced.

As I watch these images, I think of two lessons.

One, which is obviously very clear today, where extreme Islamist fundamentalist regimes and groups openly declare their desire to end our existence, is the meaning behind “Never Again.”

Never shall we rely on others for our survival, and how important it is for us to have an independent Jewish state.

The second is something most of us have kind of forgotten, but I sure didn’t.

How unvaccinated people were outcast and shunned from society during Covid, and how quickly group thinking and mob mentality take over when the media propaganda machine targets a group as dangerous and harmful.

As a society, we can’t allow ourselves to forget both lessons.

We have a duty to constantly question what we’re being told, and stay aware of how easily people can be turned against each other.
