The Last Leaf (နောက်ဆုံးသစ်ရွက်)
Once Upon a Time, two young artists named Sue and Johnsy lived in New York City. They shared a cozy, small apartment in a place called Greenwich Village. They were great friends who hoped to succeed with their creative paintings.
ဟိုးရှေးရှေးတုန်းက "ဆူး" နဲ့ "ဂျွန်စီ" လို့အမည်ရကြတဲ့ လူငယ်ပန်းချီဆရာမလေးနှစ်ယောက်ဟာ နယူးယော့ခ်မြို့မှာ နေထိုင်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။ "ဂရင်းနစ်ချ်ရွာ" လို့ခေါ်ဝေါ်ကြတဲ့ နေရာတစ်နေရာမှာ သူတို့နှစ်ယောက်ဟာ သေးငယ်သော်လည်း နွေးထွေးပြီး သက်တောင့်သက်သာရှိတဲ့ အခန်းတစ်ခန်းကို ငှားရမ်းကာမျှဝေပြီး နေထိုင်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။ သူတို့နှစ်ယောက်ဟာ သိပ်ကိုခင်မင်ကြတဲ့ သူငယ်ချင်းတွေဖြစ်ကြပြီး သူတို့ရေးဆွဲတဲ့ တီထွန်ဖန်တီးမှုကောင်းတဲ့ ပန်းချီကားတွေနဲ့အတူ အောင်မြင်လာဖို့ သူတို့နှစ်ယောက်က မျှော်လင့်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။
A cold, harsh November arrived, bringing a serious sickness to the city. Johnsy became gravely ill with pneumonia and lost her strong will to live. She started staring sadly out the window at an old ivy vine on a brick wall outside.
အေးစက်ပြီး ခက်ခဲကြမ်းတမ်းလွန်းတဲ့ နိုဝင်ဘာလသို့ ရောက်လာခဲ့ပြီ၊ ဒီနိုဝင်ဘာလမှာ နုယူးယော့ခ်မြို့သို့ ပြင်းထန်တဲ့ ရောဂါတစ်မျိုး ပြန့်နှံ့လာခဲ့တယ်။ ဂျွန်စီဟာ အဆုတ်ရောင်ရောဂါကြောင့် သေလုနိီးပါး ဖျားနာလာခဲ့တယ်၊ အဲ့ဒီနောက် ဂျွန်စီအနေနဲ့ ဒီလောကကြီးမှာ ဆက်လက်ရှင်သန်ဖို့ ပြင်းပြတဲ့စိတ်ဆန္ဒတောင် ရှိမနေခဲ့တော့ဘူးတဲ့။ ဂျွန်စီဟာ သူမအခန်းရဲ့အပြင်ဖက်က အုတ်နံရံမှာတွယ်ကပ်နေတဲ့ နွယ်ပင်အိုလေးတစ်ပင်ကို ဝမ်းနည်းစွာနဲ့ စတင်ပြီးငေးမောကြည့်နေခဲ့တော့တယ်။
Johnsy began to believe she would certainly die when the vine lost its last green leaf. Soon, strong winds and heavy rain caused almost all the leaves to fall off. She waited sadly for the one single, final leaf to drop during the night.
ဂျွန်စီအနေနဲ့ စတင်ပြီး ယုံကြည်ခဲ့တာက သူမဟာ အဲ့ဒီနွယ်ပင်အိုးလေးရဲ့ နောက်ဆုံးသစ်ရွက်ကြွေတာနဲ့ချက်ချင်းပဲ သူမသေဆုံးမယ်လို့တဲ့။ မကြာမီမှာပဲ လေပြင်းတွေတိုက်၊ မိုးတွေသည်းကြီးမဲကြီးရွာတာတွေက အဲ့ဒီနွယ်ပင်အိုးလေးရဲ့ သစ်ရွက်တွေအားလုံးနီးပါးကို ကြွေစေခဲ့တယ်။ ဂျွန်စီဟာ ဝမ်းနည်းပက်လက်နဲ့ ညဖက်မှာ နွယ်ပင်အိုလေးရဲ့ နောက်ဆုံးသစ်ရွက်ကြွေကျမယ့်အချိန်ကို စောင့်ကြည့်နေခဲ့တယ်။
Sue told their old neighbor, Mr. Behrman, about Johnsy’s strange, fatal belief. Behrman was a grumpy, sixty-year-old painter who had always dreamed of creating a masterpiece. He said Johnsy’s depressing idea was very foolish and full of nonsense.
ဂျွန်စီရဲ့ အခန်းဖော်ဖြစ်တဲ့ ဆူးက ဂျွန်စီရဲ့ ထူးဆန်းပြီး သေမင်းကိုဖိတ်ခေါ်နေတဲ့ ဒီယုံကြည်မှုအကြောင်းကို သူတို့ရဲ့ အိမ်နီးနားချင်းဟောင်း မစ္စတာဘာမန်ကို ပြောပြခဲ့တယ်။ မစ္စတာ ဘာမန်ဆိုတဲ့လူဟာ မျက်နှာထားခပ်ဆိုးဆိုးဆူပုပ်ပုပ်လေးနဲ့ အသက် ၆၀ အရွယ် ပန်းချီဆရာတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်တယ်၊ မစ္စတာဘာမန်ဟာ သူ့ဘဝမှာ မသေခင်လေးမှာတော့ အပြောင်မြောက်ဆုံးပန်းချီလက်ရာတစ်ခုကို ဖန်တီချင်နေခဲ့သူဖြစ်တယ်။ မစ္စတာဘာမန်က ဆူးကို ပြန်ပြောခဲ့တယ်၊ ဂျွန်စီရဲ့ စိတ်ဓာတ်ကျနေတဲ့အတွေးက သိပ်ကိုရူးကြောင်ကြောင်နိုင်ပြီး ဘာအဓိပ္ပာယ်မှမရှိဘူးလို့ပဲ။
The next morning, Johnsy looked out expecting the wall to finally be bare. She saw the last leaf still clinging fiercely to the wall despite the terrible storm. This single, brave leaf gave Johnsy a sudden, powerful return of hope to live.
နောက်တစ်နေ့ရဲ့မနက်ခင်းမှာတော့ ဂျွန်စီဟာ ပြတင်းပေါက်ကနေ အပြင်သို့လှမ်းပြီးကြည့်ခဲ့တယ်၊ နွယ်ပင်အိုလေးတွယ်ကပ်နေတဲ့နံရံဟာ ဘာသစ်ရွက်မှမရှိပဲ ဗလာနတ်ဖြစ်နေမယ့်မြင်ကွင်းကိုမြင်ရဖို့ မျှော်လင့်လျက်ပေါ့။ ညတုန်းက ပြင်းထန်တဲ့မုန်တိုင်းတစ်ခုတိုက်ခဲ့သော်လည်းပဲ နွယ်ပင်အိုလေးရဲ့ နောက်ဆုံးသစ်ရွက်ဟာ နံရံမှာတွယ်ကပ်လျက်ရှိနေခဲ့သေးတာကို ဂျွန်စီက မြင်ခဲ့ရတယ်။ ဒီတစ်ခုတည်းသော ရဲရင့်တဲ့သစ်ရွက်လေးက ဂျွန်စီကို လောကကြီးထဲမှာ ပြန်လည်အသက်ရှင်နေထိုင်သွားဖို့ ချက်ချင်း ခွန်အားကြီးမားလှတဲ့ မျှော်လင့်ချက်တစ်ခုကို ပေးခဲ့တယ်။
Johnsy began to feel much better and was finally safe from the dangerous illness. Sue later explained that Mr. Behrman had sadly died of pneumonia that same stormy night. The last leaf was not real, but a magnificent masterpiece he secretly painted on the wall.
ဂျွန်စီဟာ အတော်လေးကို စိတ်ခံစားချက်ကောင်းလာခဲ့ပြီး နောက်ဆုံးမှာတော့ အန္တရာယ်များလွန်းတဲ့ ဖျားနာမှုကနေ ပြန်လည်သက်သာလာခဲ့တော့တယ်။ နောက်ပိုင်းမှာတော့ ဆူးက ဂျွန်စီကို ရှင်းပြခဲ့တယ်၊ မစ္စတာဘာမန်ဟာ အဲ့ဒီမုန်တိုင်းထန်တဲ့ညမှာ အဆုတ်ရောင်ရောဂါကြောင့် ဝမ်းနည်းဖွယ်ကောင်းစွာနဲ့ပဲ ဆုံးပါးသွားခဲ့ရတယ်လို့ပေါ့။ နံရံမှာနောက်ဆုံးကျန်ရစ်ခဲ့တဲ့သစ်ရွယ်ဟာ သစ်ရွက်အစစ်မဟုတ်ပဲ မစ္စတာဘာမန် တိတ်တခိုးလေး နံရံမှာရေးဆွဲခဲ့တဲ့ ပြောင်မြောက်လှတဲ့ ပန်းချီလက်ရာသာဖြစ်တယ်။
