🔎 ISO 14001:2026 AUDIT SCENARIO — WHAT WOULD YOU FIND?
Imagine you are auditing EcoNova Advanced Manufacturing Pte. Ltd., a company transitioning from ISO 14001:2015 to ISO 14001:2026.
During the audit, you have the following conversation with the Environmental Manager.
────────
👨💼 Auditor:
“During your transition assessment, I noticed that climate change is identified as an external issue. How did you determine whether climate change could affect your EMS?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“We have identified climate change as a relevant issue because it is becoming increasingly important globally.”
👨💼 Auditor:
“Can you show me how you evaluated its potential impact on your organization?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“We haven’t done a separate assessment. We discussed it during our management meeting and concluded that our operations are not significantly affected.”
👨💼 Auditor:
“What about extreme weather, water availability, energy supply or disruption to your raw-material suppliers?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“We haven’t specifically assessed those factors.”
👨💼 Auditor:
“Have any of your customers introduced environmental or climate-related requirements?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“Yes. Two major customers recently asked us to provide carbon-emission information and information about the environmental performance of our suppliers.”
👨💼 Auditor:
“How have these requirements been incorporated into your EMS?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“Our Sales Department handles those requests. I don’t think they have been formally included in the EMS yet.”
👨💼 Auditor:
“I also understand that you outsourced your surface-treatment process six months ago. How did you evaluate the environmental implications of that change?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“GreenFinish Solutions handles that process independently. They have their own environmental controls, so we considered it outside our operational boundary.”
👨💼 Auditor:
“How do you monitor their environmental performance?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“We don’t currently monitor it. We only check whether they meet our quality requirements.”
👨💼 Auditor:
“Understood. One final question: your electricity consumption has increased by 18% since the new production line was installed. What action has management taken?”
👩💼 Environmental Manager:
“We are monitoring the data for now. We haven’t decided on any additional action yet.”

🤔 NOW, YOU ARE THE AUDITOR.
What would you do next?
Would you raise:
🔹 A Nonconformity?
🔹 An Opportunity for Improvement?
🔹 No finding?
🔹 Or would you need more objective evidence before reaching a conclusion?
And most importantly…
What would be your audit trail?
Context → Interested Parties → Environmental Aspects → Risks & Opportunities → Change → Operational Control → Environmental Performance → Management Review
