A sanctions risk assessment does not end with one score.

In this video, John Caruana, explains the 3 conclusions firms should expect to see across each risk area:

• Inherent risk
• Mitigation level
• Residual risk

And these conclusions should be assessed separately for:

• Sanctions risk
• Circumvention of sanctions risk
• Proliferation finance risk

The assessment also needs to stay current. If previous issues were identified and actions were taken, an updated assessment should reflect that progress, including where effective controls have reduced residual risk.

High impact does not automatically mean high risk.

In sanctions risk assessment work, one distinction is critical: risk is a combination of impact and likelihood.

In this short video, John Caruana, explains why assessing impact alone only tells half the story.

Likelihood should be informed by your firm’s own data.

If politically exposed persons represent just 1% of your client base, scenarios involving PEPs may have a low likelihood. If 80% of your service lines involve company incorporation, incorporation-related scenarios may be far more likely.

The key point? Your risk assessment should reflect the actual composition of your business not generic assumptions about what feels risky.
