The Malta Japan Chamber of Commerce is shocked by this sad news. It was a great opportunity for us to welcome Mr Abe when visiting Malta in 2017.

Malta Japan Chamber of Commerce joins the Malta Chamber to build more stronger business relations between both countries - Malta & Japan:

A cooperation agreement, which includes corporate membership, was signed between the Malta Chamber and Malta Japan Chamber of Commerce to cooperate together on doing business with Japan by endorsing terms of cooperation towards the development and diversification of commercial exchanges between respective countries.

The agreement follows the recent Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Japan which can benefit immensely the Maltese business community.

Perit David Xuereb, President of the Malta Chamber and Mr Anthony Micallef, President of the Malta Japan Chamber of Commerce, presided over the signing of the Cooperation Agreement.

“We are excited to have the Malta Japan Chamber of Commerce as corporate members and to embark with them on this journey towards promoting commercial exchanges for our members with such an important country. We are delighted to leverage on each other’s qualities in tandem with our respective Embassies in Malta and Japan and Trade Malta. This places us at an ideal position as the go-to-entity to do business with Japan. I therefore encourage Maltese business to help us steer the best path which best suits their needs to engage in projects of intrinsic value for them.” – Perit David Xuereb.

The terms of agreement place both Chamber resources at the disposition of each other to facilitate actions leading to economic cooperation with Japan based on expertise, the identification of sectorial interests for bilateral ties and the maximisation of networking resources with business networks like Enterprise Europe Network, to engage on joint-projects which are of mutual interest for respective members.

Malta Japan Chamber of Commerce welcomes the opening of the Embassy of Malta in Tokyo and looks forward to work hand in hand to strengthen further the relationship between both countries. Whilst thanking the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs for this great achievement, we also augur the very best to Ambassador Andre Spiteri for this new journey.

Malta opens its embassy in Japan

The Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs is pleased to inform that the Embassy of Malta in Japan officially opened its doors as from 28 September 2020. Malta and Japan have enjoyed excellent bilateral ties ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations on 15 July 1965. Having witnessed an intensification in our bilateral contact over the past few years, a decision to open permanent representation in Tokyo was first announced in November 2018. It is auspicious that the opening of this embassy falls on the 55th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations, and a clear indication of Malta’s view that Japan is an important partner and leader in world affairs. The Embassy of Malta in Japan is presided by Ambassador Andre Spiteri.

A sad announcement from Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who confirmed resigning over health problems. He had been serving as Prime Minister and President of the Liberal Democratic Party since 2012.

Great achievements during his term as PM especially the latest reform of the Japan - EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). On 17 July 2018 the European Union and Japan signed the Economic Partnership Agreement, the biggest Trade Agreement ever negotiated by the EU that created an open trade zone covering over 600 million people. This agreement entered into force on 1st February 2019.

He was the longest serving Prime Minister in Japanese History and he and his government unveiled a comprehensive policy package to revive the Japanese economy, today known as Abenomics.

The Malta Japan Chamber of Commerce wishes him a quick recovery and more future success in the coming years.
