🇲🇹
🎄 Qatt ħsibtu dwar l-oriġini tal-kelma Milied?

✍🏻 Il-kelma “Milied” ġejja mill-kelma Għarbija ميلاد (mila:d) li tfisser “jum it-twelid”. Infatti, kieku xi ħadd kellu jistaqsik meta huwa jum twelidek bl-Għarbi, bejn wieħed u ieħor se jistaqsik meta huwa “miliedek” (mīlādik: مَيلا دَك). “Milied” huwa wkoll l-unika nom mimmat fil-Malti li juri żmien.

🌟 Fl-Għarbi tal-Insara nsibu l-kelma عَ يَد مَيلاد (‘ayd mīlād) li tfisser propju “Christmas” u li kieku kellna nippruvaw neqilbuha għall-Malti tiġi “Għid il-Milied”.

🧐 Hawnhekk qed naraw kif l-ismijiet bil-Malti għall-iktar żewġ festi importanti għall-Insara t-tnejn li huma ġejjin mill-Għarbi, għalkemm aħna għamilnielhom ftit adattamenti.

📜 Il-kelma “Milied” biddilnielha ftit it-tifsira, u għalina tfisser il-jum li fih niċċelebraw it-twelid ta’ Ġesù. Imbagħad, għandna l-kelma “Għid” — li nużawha biex niċċelebraw il-qawmien mill-mewt ta’ Ġesù — u li wkoll slifnieha mill-kelma Għarbija عَ يَد (‘ayd), li fl-Għarbi tfisser festa jew jum ta’ festa.

🎁 Nieħdu l-opportunità biex nawgurawlkom l-isbaħ żmien ta’ festi.

🇬🇧
🎄 Have you ever wondered about the origins of the word “Milied” (EN: Christmas)?

✍🏻 The Maltese word “Milied” is derived from the Arabic word ميلاد (mila:d), which means birthday. In fact, if someone were to ask you about your birthday in Arabic, they would use the word “mīlādik” (مَيلا دَك).

🌟 In Arabic, the word for Christmas is مَيلاد (‘ayd mīlād), which if we were to try and translate it to Maltese, would become “Għid il-Milied”.

🧐 Those of you familiar with some of Malta’s most important religious feasts may have noticed that the Maltese names for Christmas and Easter are both derived from Arabic.

📜 With time, the word “Milied” in Maltese came to mean “the birth of Christ” — which is essentially what Christmas is all about.

🥚 The word “Għid”— the Maltese name for the feast of Easter — is also borrowed from the Arabic word عَ يَد (‘ayd), which means feast day or celebration. For us Maltese, “Għid” came to mean what, perhaps, is the biggest celebration for Christians — the resurrection of Christ.

🎁 We take the opportunity to wish you all a great festive season.

At Pristineworks, we do professional Maltese translations and translations into English along with other language services for many companies worldwide.

🇲🇹
🟢 Skont ir-regoli tal-ortografija Deċiżjonijiet 1, l-ismijiet tal-irjieħ u d-direzzjonijiet għandhom dejjem jinkitbu b’ittra kapitali. Anke jekk ir-riħ jew id-direzzjoni jissemmew fin-nofs jew fit-tarf tas-sentenza, l-ewwel ittra trid tkun kbira.

🌬️ Mela ftakar, għandek dejjem tikteb Tramuntana, Grigal, Lvant, Xlokk, Nofsinhar, Lbiċ, Punent, u Majjistral bl-ewwel ittra kbira.

🇬🇧
🟢 According to the spelling rules Deċiżjonijiet 1, the names of winds and directions should start with a capital letter. Even if the wind or direction is mentioned in the middle or at the end of a sentence, its first letter must always be in uppercase.

🌬️ Get to know the winds and directions in Maltese: Tramuntana (North), Grigal (North East), Lvant (East), Xlokk (South East), Nofsinhar (South), Lbiċ (South West), Punent (West), and Majjistral (North West).

🇲🇹
Hawnhekk għandna l-verb ‘bagħat’, verb sħiħ bl-għ fin-nofs, li huwa kkonjugat fil-forma tal-imperattiv fit-tieni persuna plural (intom).

Bħala mudell, nistgħu nużaw il-verb ‘seraq’.
isirqu = ibagħtu

Iżda, filwaqt li f’dan il-każ ‘ibatu messaġġ’ hija ħażina, il-kelma ‘ibatu’ teżisti u tintuża f’kuntesti oħra.

‘Ibatu’ miktuba b’dan il-mod hija l-forma tal-imperfett fit-tielet persuna singular (huma jbatu) tal-verb ‘bata’.

Il-verb ‘bata’ (EN: to suffer) ma jieħu l-ebda għ għax huwa verb dgħajjef nieqes (jiġifieri l-għerq tiegħu huwa b-t-j).

🇬🇧
‘Ibagħtu’ (EN: send) is the imperative form of the verb ‘bagħat’ (EN: he sent) in the second-person plural form.

To know where to put the letter ‘għ’, we can use the verb ‘seraq’ as a model:
isirqu (EN: steal) = ibagħtu (EN: send)

However, the form ‘ibatu’ also exists in Maltese, albeit it carries a different meaning than ‘ibagħtu’. ‘Ibatu’ (EN: they suffer) is the imperfect form of the verb ‘bata’ (EN: he suffered) in the third-person plural form.

As you can see, the verb ‘bata’ (EN: he suffered) never takes the letter ‘għ’.

🇲🇹
Hawnhekk għandna l-verb ‘għin’ fil-forma tal-imperattiv, flimkien mal-pronom mehmuż tal-ewwel persuna singular.

Mela, jekk naqsmu ‘għinni’ fil-kostitwenti tagħha, naraw li hija magħmula minn:
għin + lili

Il-pronom mehmuż tal-ewwel persuna singular huwa ‘ni’. Għalhekk, ma nistgħux niktbu ‘għini’ b’n waħda għax inkunu qed inħallu barra l-n tal-pronom mehmuż.

Bħala mudell, tista’ tuża l-verb ‘sab’ fil-forma tal-imperattiv ukoll.
sibni = għinni

🇬🇧
Here we have the verb ‘għin’ (EN: help) in the imperative form combined with the attached pronoun in the first-person singular form.

Let’s break it up into its components:
għin (EN: help) + lili (EN: me) = għinni

‘ni’ in ‘għinni’ (EN: help me) represents the attached pronoun in the first-person singular form. Although we might be tricked into writing it as ‘għini’, we need to keep in mind that it takes a double ‘n’.

As a model verb to guide you, you may use the verb ‘sab’ (EN: he found) in the imperative form:

sibni (EN: find me) = għinni (EN: help me)

🇲🇹
Il-kelma ‘kulma’ taqa’ fil-kategorija ta’ kliem magħmul minn żewġ elementi lessikali fejn l-ewwel kelma li jkollha konsonanti doppja fit-tarf tingħaqad ma’ kelma oħra li tibda b’konsonanti, u għalhekk, il-konsonanti doppja taqa’. Peress li meta ‘kull’ u ‘ma’ jingħaqdu joħolqu tifsira distinta waħda, għandhom dejjem jinkitbu magħqudin.

Fost kliem ieħor bħal ‘kulma’ insibu:

kemxejn (kemm + xejn)
kulħadd (kull + ħadd)
kuljum (kull + jum)
kultant (kull + tant)

🇬🇧
In Maltese, we have words that are made up of two words. The word ‘kulma’ is one of them: kull + ma
With words like 'kulma', if the first word ends with a double consonant, one of the consonants has to be dropped: kull + ma = kulma
Since when we combine the two words ‘kull’ + ‘ma’, we end up with a new word that has a distinct meaning, ‘kulma’ must always be written as one whole word.

Other words like ‘kulma’ include:

kemxejn (kemm + xejn)
kulħadd (kull + ħadd)
kuljum (kull + jum)
kultant (kull + tant)

🇲🇹
Hawnhekk ix-xi qed tintuża bħala aġġettiv indefinit, u qed taqdi t-tifsira ta’ ‘madwar’ jew ‘bejn wieħed u ieħor’. F’każijiet bħal dawn, ix-xi m’għandha qatt titqassar għal x’ u lanqas ma għandha tingħaqad mal-artiklu.

🇬🇧
Here, ‘xi’ is acting as an indefinite adjective, taking on the meaning of ‘approximately’. In such cases, ‘xi’ must not be shortened to x’ and neither should it be combined with the article.
