Malta’s accession to the EU in 2004 brought both opportunities and challenges. With market protection removed, the local wine industry faced an influx of global wines, whose economies of scale made competition even tougher. Farming subsidies supported viticulture, but Malta’s small size remained a challenge in a market dominated by larger producers. A new chapter in the story of Maltese wine—one of adaptation and perseverance.
