The pigeon saga continues.
After almost three years of silence since the pigeon contraceptive project ended, we have continued doing our utmost to manage the species and reduce the damage it causes to public and private property.
While much of this work has taken place behind the scenes, our commitment has never wavered. Through monitoring, scientific assessment, and responsible management practices, we have continued striving to find effective and humane solutions that balance public concerns with animal welfare.
In recent months, the saga has continued following reports that these birds may be trapped and culled as a management measure. This reignited discussions on how urban pigeon populations should be managed and reminded us of the importance of long-term, science-based solutions.
We reminded both the public and the authorities of the success achieved by the pigeon contraceptive project before it was prematurely brought to an end. The project demonstrated that humane population management can be an effective tool in reducing pigeon numbers and the associated problems they create, without resorting to lethal measures. Unfortunately, the initiative was discontinued before its full long-term potential could be realized.
To support our findings, we went a step further by publishing several academic papers documenting both the scientific research and the extensive fieldwork carried out throughout the project. Our goal has always been to ensure that decisions regarding pigeon management are guided by evidence, data, and practical experience rather than assumptions or emotions alone.
This evening, we will be discussing this topic on Ricky's popular podcast, where we will revisit the pigeon management saga, the results of the contraceptive project, and the scientific research that supported it. We will also be discussing the management of several other pest species and alien species currently affecting our islands, exploring the challenges they present and the solutions available to address them.
As always, the aim is to encourage informed discussion based on science, field experience, and factual evidence, while highlighting the importance of balancing environmental protection, public health, animal welfare, and effective species management.
