Are You Specifying the Wrong Plastic for Malta's Public Spaces?
We often hear: "It's basically the same, isn't it? Both are plastic-based, both look like wood, both are low maintenance." But when it comes to urban furniture for Malta’s public spaces, not all plastics are created equal. Confusing the two can lead to costly mistakes over time.
FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT MATERIALS
WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) is made from wood fibres (30% to 70%) bound with plastic polymers. It can replicate timber’s look in controlled, temperate environments.
Recycled plastic lumber, as specified by Malta Design, contains no wood fibres. It’s 100% plastic, typically HDPE, produced from post-consumer waste. While both may appear similar in brochures, they perform very differently in practice.
WHAT HAPPENS TO WPC IN MALTA
Malta’s environment is harsh on organic materials: intense UV, coastal salt air, temperature swings, and heavy public use.
WPC’s wood fibres absorb moisture, leading to swelling, micro-cracking, and degradation over time. Surface splintering, colour inconsistency, and structural fatigue often appear in years two, five, or seven—long before the expected lifespan is reached. Surface chalking, colour fading, and micro-cracking are common with low-to-mid grade WPC in demanding outdoor settings.
WHAT RECYCLED PLASTIC ACTUALLY OFFERS
- Zero moisture absorption: No swelling, cracking, rot, or mould.
- Zero maintenance: No sanding, oiling, or painting—just soap and water.
- Graffiti resistance: Non-porous surface allows easy cleaning.
- Consistent coastal performance: Chemically inert to salt, no corrosion.
- Long lifespan: Documented durability of 25 to 50 years under normal public use.
THE HONEST CONVERSATION ABOUT COST
Recycled plastic urban furniture costs more upfront—typically 20% to 40% more than WPC. But consider the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): a WPC bench may need repainting in year four, show degradation by year eight, and require replacement by year twelve. In contrast, a recycled plastic bench can last twenty-five years with no intervention. For public space procurement, the TCO argument for recycled plastic is decisive.
