Recently, INIA had the pleasure of hosting a group of residents from CareMalta long-term residential facilities, together with their respective Home Managers, for a meaningful exchange centred on the lived experiences of older persons. The group was welcomed by Rosette Farrugia-Bonello, INIA’s Deputy Director, and Professor Marvin Formosa, INIA’s Director, who also provided an overview of INIA’s work and international remit in the field of ageing, policy, training, and research.
The visit created a valuable space for dialogue, interaction, and social exchange, where the older persons had the opportunity to share personal stories, experiences, and reflections from their lives, while also networking with one another in a warm and engaging environment. These exchanges highlighted the richness of older persons’ lived experiences and the important contributions they continue to make to society.
Also present for the meeting was Natalie Briffa Farrugia, Chairperson of the Vassallo Group, who expressed her appreciation to INIA for organising the activity. She emphasised the importance of creating platforms that recognise older persons as individuals with unique histories, knowledge, and lived experience, while also strengthening the connection between academia and the realities of ageing. The event served as an enriching learning experience for everyone involved in the field of ageing, reinforcing the importance of listening to and engaging directly with older persons in discussions, research, and initiatives that concern their wellbeing, dignity, and quality of life.
