🏝️ Giving European islands a stronger voice

Joseph Borg, Vice President of INSULEUR and Vice President of the Gozo Business Chamber, represented INSULEUR President Giannis Roussos during Eurochambres’ visit to Malta on 4 and 5 June 2026, which included the 137th Eurochambres General Assembly . 🇲🇹🇪🇺

During the event, William Spiteri Bailey, President of The Malta Chamber, highlighted the importance of islands within the European Union’s economy and the need for their specific realities to be properly reflected in European policymaking.

Building on this message, Joseph Borg emphasised that islands must not be viewed merely as holiday destinations. They are home to communities, businesses, skills and resources that can contribute significantly to both national and European economies.

For islands to fulfil this potential, they must be provided with the right conditions, infrastructure and policy support, particularly in areas such as:

🚢 accessibility and connectivity
⚡ energy
💻 digital infrastructure
🚚 transport and logistics
🇪🇺 access to the Single Market

With the right support, islands can become important centres of entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainable development and economic diversification.

INSULEUR remains committed to ensuring that the voice of European island chambers is heard and that islands are recognised as active contributors to Europe’s competitiveness, resilience and future growth.

🌍 What does the “Right to Stay” mean for Gozo?

For the Gozo Business Chamber, it means more than simply being able to remain on the island.

It means being able to build a career, develop a business, access education and services, participate in innovation and enjoy a good quality of life - without being compelled to relocate in search of better opportunities.

📄 The Chamber has submitted its response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the Right to Stay Strategy: Your Region, Your Future.

Our position is clear: Gozo is not a backward region. It is a resilient and economically active island region. However, structural disparities remain, particularly because of its economic composition, connectivity constraints and the limited presence of higher value-added, export-oriented and knowledge-based sectors.

For Gozo, the Right to Stay must therefore be linked to:

🔹 greater economic diversification;
🔹 stronger opportunities for young people;
🔹 support for start-ups, innovation and entrepreneurship;
🔹 the attraction of higher value-added activity;
🔹 reliable physical and digital connectivity; and
🔹 policies that properly reflect the realities of island regions.

The Chamber also highlights the importance of coordinating this initiative with the forthcoming EU Strategy for Islands, particularly in areas such as connectivity, territorial proofing, regional data, skills, innovation, cohesion policy and State aid.

The Chamber believes that with the right conditions, the island can become not only a place where people are able to stay, but a place where they can build, grow and thrive. 💡🏝️
