The International Seabed Authority (ISA), in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Centre for Marine Living Resources & Ecology (CMLRE), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, will convene the 7th ISA Deep-Sea Taxonomic Standardization Workshop from 7–11 September 2026 in Kochi, India.

The five-day workshop will strengthen the capacity of developing coastal States of the Indian Ocean in biodiversity assessment, species identification, sample curation and biodiversity data management.

Participants will benefit from expert-led lectures and hands-on practical sessions covering key areas of deep-sea biodiversity research, including deep-sea macrofauna sampling and processing, taxonomic identification and species description, DNA barcoding and microscopy, biodiversity analysis and functional traits, as well as sample preservation, curation and data sharing.

The workshop, held under the framework of ISA’s Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative (SSKI), will promote regional scientific collaboration, strengthen networks of deep-sea biodiversity experts and contribute to improved knowledge for sustainable ocean governance and conservation of marine biodiversity.

On 4 August 2026, the IORA Secretariat welcomed Mr Frantz Celestin, International Organization for Migration (IOM) Regional Director for East, Horn and Southern Africa, and his delegation to Ebene, Mauritius.

The delegation met IORA Officials to discuss opportunities for enhanced cooperation on Maritime Safety and Security, Disaster Risk Management, and Climate Change.

The meeting underscored IORA’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with regional and international organisations to address shared challenges across the Indian Ocean Region.

The Second Advisory Meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Academic Group (IORAG) Member State Focal Points with the IORAG Early Career Professionals (ECP) Network Steering Committee was held virtually on 28 July 2026.

The meeting brought together Member State National Focal Points, IORAG Focal Points and members of the ECP Network Steering Committee. Participants received updates on the progress of the ECP Network, discussed opportunities to strengthen Member State engagement, and were briefed on the call for applications for the second cohort of the ECP Network Steering Committee, reaffirming IORA's commitment to advancing and empowering early career professionals across the Indian Ocean region.

On 23–24 July 2026, the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), in collaboration with the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK), concluded the IORA–MABIK International Webinar on Blue Technology for Sustainable Utilization of Marine Bio-resources in the Indian Ocean.

Organised under the Republic of Korea–Indian Ocean Cooperation Fund (KICF), the webinar brought together government officials, researchers, scientists, and practitioners from across the Indian Ocean region to exchange knowledge and experiences on blue technology, marine biotechnology, sustainable seafood value chains, ecosystem restoration, blue carbon and climate resilience.

The webinar also featured country presentations, providing an opportunity for participating Member States to share national priorities, challenges and opportunities in the sustainable utilisation of marine bio-resources.
