13 October 2026: On the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, reaffirms its commitment to a safer, more disaster-resilient Indian Ocean Region.

Since 2011, Disaster Risk Management (DRM) has been a priority area for regional cooperation within IORA. The Association advances this work through its Working Group on Disaster Risk Management.

IORA has collaborated with international and regional organisations to strengthen the disaster risk management capacities of its Member States.

Stronger regional cooperation can help build a more disaster-resilient Indian Ocean Region, leaving no one behind.

On 12 October 2026, Mr Riana ANDRIANJAFY, a representative from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), visited the IORA Secretariat for an exchange on renewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the draft MoU and foster a common understanding of the proposed framework for cooperation. The exchange reflects the continued engagement between IORA and UNITAR in exploring opportunities for strengthening collaboration in training and Capacity building in the Indian Ocean Region.

📢 Our follow-up webinar series on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) continues.

IORA, in collaboration with GIZ, will convene the second session of its three-part follow-up webinar series on EPR for IORA Member States. It will take place on 13 October 2026, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. (GMT+02:00).

This session will explore how clear legal obligations, defined institutional roles and effective compliance mechanisms can support EPR implementation. Discussions will cover scope and definitions, obligations and institutional roles, operational interfaces, and compliance architecture.

Participants will also share country experiences, providing an opportunity to exchange insights on developing and implementing legal frameworks for EPR.

On 29 September 2026, a U.S. delegation led by Mr Steve Recca, Senior Operations Advisor at the Pacific Disaster Centre (PDC Global), accompanied by officials from the U.S. Embassy (Mauritius), visited the IORA Secretariat. The delegation met with H.E. Mr Sanjiv Ranjan, Secretary-General of IORA and Secretariat officials to explore opportunities for cooperation on Disaster Risk Management in the Indian Ocean region.

The Pacific Disaster Center (PDC Global) is a Hawaii-based applied science center that has pioneered technologies in global risk reduction and multi-hazard early warning.

The PDC Global helps governments, communities, and international organizations anticipate, prepare for, and manage natural and man-made disasters through DisasterAWARE -an AI-powered, multi-hazard early warning and risk intelligence platform and Disaster Alert App , a free public mobile and web application providing real-time alerts and maps.

Building on the strong engagement during the previous Webinar Series on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), IORA, in collaboration with GIZ, is launching a three-part follow-up series for IORA Member States.

The first webinar, Waste Segregation, will take place on 29 September 2026, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. (GMT+02:00). Effective separation of waste at source is essential to recycling and recovery systems and helps EPR schemes deliver results.

The session will explore the roles of different stakeholders, the objectives of waste segregation, and key choices in designing segregation systems. IORA Member States will also share their experiences and best practices, followed by a question-and-answer session.

The International Seabed Authority (ISA), in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Centre for Marine Living Resources & Ecology (CMLRE), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, will convene the 7th ISA Deep-Sea Taxonomic Standardization Workshop from 7–11 September 2026 in Kochi, India.

The five-day workshop will strengthen the capacity of developing coastal States of the Indian Ocean in biodiversity assessment, species identification, sample curation and biodiversity data management.

Participants will benefit from expert-led lectures and hands-on practical sessions covering key areas of deep-sea biodiversity research, including deep-sea macrofauna sampling and processing, taxonomic identification and species description, DNA barcoding and microscopy, biodiversity analysis and functional traits, as well as sample preservation, curation and data sharing.

The workshop, held under the framework of ISA’s Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative (SSKI), will promote regional scientific collaboration, strengthen networks of deep-sea biodiversity experts and contribute to improved knowledge for sustainable ocean governance and conservation of marine biodiversity.
