Afrobarometer has recently released it's latest pan-Africa profiles on youth titled: From aspiration to action Barriers to youth empowerment in Africa. The report is based on 50,961 interviews conducted during Afrobarometer's Round 10 surveys across 38 African countries in 2024/2025.

So, what are the primary barriers to youth employment?

African youth cite inadequate training, lack of work experience, unwillingness to work certain jobs, and mismatch in skills and training.

Straconsult, Afrobarometer’s National Partner in Mauritius, held a master presentation on the 18th of November at the University of Mauritius in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. The event also marked the university's 60th Anniversary.

Louis Amédée Darga, the National Investigator presented the Afrobarometer organisation, it’s vision, Round 10 results and highlighted Straconsult’s longstanding collaboration with AB as National Partner since 2012.

On the same occasion, Afrobarometer's ODA (Online Data Analysis) was presented to the students showing them the wealth of high-quality data that such platforms offer for research on Africa. The session wrapped up with an engaging discussion on politics and youth activism. Mr. Darga left students with a powerful message: “Change is up to you", encouraging the new generation to take initiatives and feel empowered to drive meaningful transformation.

Over the years, Africa has become a key market for Mauritius 🇲🇺, helping reduce reliance on traditional European markets.

📦 Between 2020-2023, countries like South Africa, Madagascar, and Kenya absorbed around 85% of Mauritius’ total domestic exports to Africa.

💸 In 2022, exports to Africa peaked at Rs 19.7 billion, accounting for 32% of Mauritius’ global exports — despite a 15% drop in 2023.

👕 Garments & apparel remain top exports, showcasing Mauritius' stronghold in textiles. While often seen as a weakness, the textile sector is the backbone of our manufacturing industry.
