Vastu shastr...Northern and Southern hemisphere myth
Vastu Shastra was devised as an extension of sacred geography related to temple architecture. It was originally applied to palaces, granaries, and came to be incorporated into town planning. As you can see, the system developed in India. Hence, they do not address differences in southern and northern hemisphere.
India is in the northern hemisphere. From tantrika and agama traditions, we can see that temples in south-east Asian countries like Indonesia located in southern hemisphere follow the same principles. Therefore it may be safe to conclude that the general principles were the same in both northern and southern hemispheres. Small variations might have existed owing to direction of winds and seasonal differences.
The Indian religious influence wrt Sthapatya Shastra did not extend into Australia, South Africa, Brazil, etc. Therefore it is hard to say what should apply in these regions, given that the sun is placed in the north sky. Since variations are permitted based on region, it may be appropriate to use one’s own knowledge of vastu shastra and self-intuition when making decisions regarding this.
Personally, would think that too much emphasis on this may not be appropriate. The earth’s tilt (responsible for the 4 seasons) changes within a 40000 year period. We are already seeing erratic climatic changes. Add to it changes in the Earth’s magnetic field (also associated with the same approx.40000 year cycle). These changes are being brought upon us faster than we think.
For peace of mind, just ensure that basic principles are followed (since vastu allows up to two or three different acceptable placements) and leave the rest to nature.
Thank you. God Bless.
