WHEN IT MATTERS MOST
Patrick Achitabwino
Presence at festivities is fine and good. Being there when there is sunshine is good. Nothing wrong with that. Nevertheless, you matter most when you are a candle in the midst of darkness than as an es**rt in bright sunshine. You matter most when you are the shelter when it is raining unlike as a running partner at a sports centre. You matter most when you give a person something to eat at the most vulnerable moment, when someone has no shoulder to lean on.
Bonds cement hard when pain bites, when abandonment is all that the majority subjects you to, when neglect is what life has painted you.
Reality is that people whose wounded souls you sutured would sacrifice for you when it is your turn. They would remember how you kept them walking when they had no energy to stand up.
The paradox with life, however, is that we hunt for people after they have journeyed alone, desolately, through the treacherous terrain of death, abandonment, job loss, business failure, heart breaks. By this time they realise that such is just shadow love that escapes when light goes off.
Be there when everybody else disappears, when hope evaporates, when the future looks blank, when opportunities are just only a song to the ears.
