NO PROGRESS VISIBLE IN AFRICA, ONLY STAGNATION.

08/09/2024

China has just pledged more funds for Africa. More funds for African countries to borrow. This was announced at the just ended China - Africa Cooperation Summit.

But is this what Africa needs? Is that the solution we need to our perennial problems?

Africans will always argue and fight over the causes of economic problems on Africa. Governments always blame everyone else except themselves. They wont look at the core problems. Politicians plunder the nations' wealth through various forms of corruption, and run to China, IMF and other multilateral institutions for debt when squeezed. At present Africa's external debts stands at $1.1 trillion. A sizeable chunk of that is owed to China.

Many economists agree that that this is a dire situation. Africa needs help. After listening to Africa's pleas, China has stepped in to help. But what have they brought? More debt! China has just announced it is setting aside $60 billion for loans and investment in Africa.

As always African governments will stumble over each other in an attempt to secure the debt. But is that the solution we need.

I feel we are still missing the opportunities we need to develop our continent. It is foolhardy to think that the West or China have African interests at heart. Whatever decisions China or the West make, are designed to benefit their countries and their people. That's why their economies are so huge now, and ours are still tiny.

Wake up Africa. The solution is not in China or in the West. The solution is with us, we have to start by changing the way we are running things. The whole outlook of our policies and how we implement them. Lets refocus and concentrate more on extracting and processing our resources here on our continent. Lets stop plundering and misusing funds from our gold, diamonds, cobalt, uranium, lithium and graphite mines. And indeed funds from taxes. Governments have to be accountable to the people.

In short if we change ourselves and become more ethical, honest and unselfish, this continent will develop. Believe me.

Great writings as always

: The ability to get up from failure defines an entrepreneur.
__"I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed”. Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is not only one of the great athletes in the history of sport, but he was I think the first athlete to become a billionaire. And he did so when he retired and became a successful entrepreneur.

I will never forget the first time I saw this quote on a huge billboard in New York. I completely choked up and allowed the tears to run down the side of my face. It cut deep into me as it brought back floods of memories of my own failures: businesses that had collapsed; countless projects that had failed to take off; failure to raise money for things only I knew could succeed but no one else had believed in me. Failed partnerships that ended in total acrimony. Countless, countless failures that never made headlines and the humiliation of those that did.

Then there were the blatant corruptions and prejudices that had killed dream projects leaving me to pick up the pieces.

Looking back on all that, I suddenly realized that I have succeeded because I trained myself to get up from failures. You will have to do the same.

I understood that it is not the people with the best ideas, or the smartest, who succeed. All those things matter, but the entrepreneur has something extra... They are not afraid to fail.

Imagine a great footballer whose team just lost the World Cup Final. They are initially gutted, and it seems to them like it is all over, but a few weeks later they are back in training and preparing for the next tournament.

They put the failure behind them and use the lessons to prepare them for ultimate success. That MUST be you!

Forget those who laugh at you or take jibes on social media; they are not entrepreneurs and will never be. True entrepreneurs will never laugh or take joy in the failure of someone who tried.

And they are ready to cheer the moment you are back in the game because now they know you are a winner in the making!

My team noticed a list of "Famous Failures" on social media recently. They aren't all entrepreneurs but people who never gave up despite big setbacks. [Credit to the author but not sure who compiled them]. You may have some stories to share of your own.

# Michael Jordan: After being cut from his high school [Senior school] basketball team, he went home, locked himself in his room, and cried.

# Albert Einstein: He wasn't able to speak till he was about 4 years old and his teachers said he would "never amount to much".

# Walt Disney: He was fired from a newspaper for "lacking imagination" and "having no original ideas".

# Steve Jobs: At 30 years old he was left devastated and depressed after being unceremoniously removed from the company he started.

# Oprah Winfrey: She was demoted from her job as a news anchor because she "wasn't fit for television".

# The Beatles: Decca Recording Studios rejected them saying: "We don't like their sound--they have no future in show business".

Now for your homework: Why not make yourself a list of what you are going to leave behind this new year. Maybe it's a negative mindset when challenges occur? Or? What's holding you back that you can change with a decision, discipline, and commitment?

And where are you headed to be this time next year?

Wherever you are, get ready for the future. It's coming, and it's coming fast, and you better get ready.

As always, my prayer is that all of you may have a peaceful, healthy, and prosperous year ahead.

You each are shining stars in your own way. Especially in trying times, never forget that.

This is a special week, focusing on environment and environmental issues with Liberty Earth Foundation .

Today the focus is on climate change and global warming.

The United Nations defines climate change as long term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. While climate change may be caused by natural factors, it is widely accepted that human activities are the main drivers of climate change. Though, over the years we have seen some high profile people denying this link between human activities and climate change.

We can't discuss climate change without discussing global warming. Infact, global warming is at the centre of this global climate change crisis. Global warming is not climate change, it is however the primary cause of climate change. Global warming refers to the gradual rise in global temperatures. This is mainly caused by greenhouse gases that come from burning fossil fuels, massive clearing of forests, agriculture, melting of polar ice and other natural and human activities. The major greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide and methane.

Malawi as a country, has been devastated by some extreme weather events, linked to climate change and global warming. Flooding, cyclones and extreme droughts and erratic rainfall patterns have been some of the greatest effects, experienced in Malawi.

Solving issues of climate change and global warming requires a global effort that small countries like Malawi normally have no influence over. This is because most of the pollution from industries that is causing emission of greenhouse gases emanates from industrialized countries. That is not to mean that Malawi has not contributed, however the contribution is negligible.

This, however, does not mean Malawi and other developing countries should not do anything about it.

Malawi needs to adopt clean sources of energy, to stop the massive depletion of forests and burning of fossil fuels in transportation and manufacturing industries.

Malawi has been planting trees, however this has been futile, because just a small percentage of the trees really survive. This is because the root cause of this problem: poverty and rapid population growth have not yet been solved.

Copied from somewhere but still powerful.

ADVICES TO ALL

1. Build a home earlier. Be it rural home or urban home. Building a house at 50 is not an achievement. Don't get used to government houses. This comfort is so dangerous. Let all your family have good time in your house.

2. Go home. Don't stick at work all the year. You are not the pillar of your department. If you drop dead today, you will be replaced immediately and operations will continue. Make your family a priority.

3. Don't chase promotions. Master your skills and be excellent at what you do. If they want to promote you, that's fine if they don't, stay positive to your personal.
development.

4. Avoid office or work gossip. Avoid things that tarnish your name or reputation. Don't join the bandwagon that backbites your bosses and colleagues. Stay away from negative gatherings that have only people as their agenda.

5. Don't ever compete with your bosses. You will burn your fingers. Don't compete with your colleagues, you will fry your brain.

6. Ensure you have a side business. Your salary will not sustain your needs in the long run.

7. Save some money. Let it be deducted automatically from your payslip.

8. Borrow a loan to invest in a business or to change a situation not to buy luxury. Buy luxury from your profit.

9. Keep your life, marriage and family private. Let them stay away from your work. This is very important.

10. Be loyal to yourself and believe in your work. Hanging around your boss will alienate you from your colleagues. This may cause you problems when your boss leaves

11. Retire early. The best way to plan for your exit was when you received the employment letter. The other best time is today. By 40 to 50 be out.

12. Join work welfare and be an active member always. It will help you a lot when any eventuality occurs.

13.Take leave days utilize them by developing your future home or projects..usually what you do during your leave days is a reflection of how you'll live after retirement..
