FROM FAMILY BUSINESS TO FAMILY FOUNDATION: MEET THANDIE ZULU
How Second-Hand Clothes from Kaunjika Built a Home, Funded Education, and Supported Farming
At 34, Thandie Zulu is proof that second-hand clothes do more than dress people. They build lives.
Based at Kachere Market, Thandie’s journey started in 2011. Fresh out of school, she joined her family’s second-hand clothes and shoes business. For four years, she learned the trade — pricing, customer care, and how to spot quality in a bale.
But in 2015, Thandie was ready for more. She stepped out on her own. Her first move as an independent entrepreneur started with a Mix 2 bale from Dapp Wholesale Malawi.
“I knew Dapp bales from the family business,” Thandie says. “So when I started mine, I trusted Dapp to give me the quality I needed to attract customers.”
That decision changed everything.
Nine years later, Thandie’s Kaunjika business has become her foundation. Through second-hand clothes, she has:
1. Built her own house — A dream that once felt distant is now her family’s shelter.
2. Funded education* — Her children’s school fees are secured, year after year.
3. Supported farming — Profits from clothes help her buy inputs and grow food, creating a second stream of income.
Thandie represents thousands of Malawian women who use Kaunjika not just to earn, but to transform. They are traders, builders, mothers, and farmers — all through second-hand clothes and shoes. All through KAUNJIKA.
