SUCCESS STORY, GVH MWENENGUWE
Mr James Kalua is from Lubeni village in GVH Mwenenguwe, he is a single parent and he is 45 years old. He has 5 children, of which 3 are male and 2 are female.
Before the KiWASH project started in the area, he had no bathroom, no toilet, and other household facilities at his home. The family was using the back of the house as a hiding place when he wants to take a bath since his house is near a hill. He and his family used to go to the bush to ease themselves and this was the lifestyle of his family in all the past years. This affected the health of the household as in most cases the family was affected by sanitation and hygiene related diseases such as dysentery and others. This affected his financial capacity as he use to spend much of his money on medical bills, transportation cost to the hospital and it also affected participation of his kids in school as in most cases they were not attending classes due to sicknesses. He was also being embarrassed in communities as he was mocked by some individuals on the issues of toilet versus entering into the bush.
‘Before this project come in this village, my family used to go to the bush to ease ourselves and we used to bath at the back of our house. This was our life style in the previous years. My family used to suffer from various diseases such as cholera and dysentery and i used to spend more on medical bills and transportation to the hospital. My children used to be absent at school as they were usually being affected by diseases as a results their performance at school was greatly affected, explained Mr James kalua.
Since the introduction of KiWASH project in the area, the sanitation and hygiene situation has improved in his household. The project through WASH component encourages his family to construct a toilet with drop hole cover, bathroom, kitchen, dish lack , cloth line and rubbish pit and others as these facilities are essential in improving sanitation and hygiene of hou

WASH PROJECT STORY OF CHANGE
Kasisis primary school is located in GVH Mwenekawe, VH Nathan in TA kilupula. The school has total enrollment of about 690 pupils with 323 being boys and 367 being girls.
The school had inadequate number of toilets for both boys and girls as per the required and recommended standard for number of pupils per toilet and toilets which were available were just temporarily constructed. In total, Kasisi primary School previously had 6 toilets of which 2 temporary toilets were for girls and 3 temporary toilets were for boys. These temporary toilets had no menstrual management facilities, as well as a place where pupils can wash their hands after using them.

Some of the temporary toilets which pupils were using at Kasisi Primary School

Inadequate toilets at Kasisi Primary School increased congestion and pressure in terms of usage of the toilets facilities forcing other pupils to be uncomfortable with the learning environment, particularly for pupils in senior classes. Some of the pupils used to go outside to either urinate or defecate as the toilets were always full of other pupils in use. This increased rate of disease outbreaks such as diahoea and dysentery and other hygiene related diseases. The situation resulted in increased absenteeism for both boys and girls in all the classes and other pupils opted to go back and use the toilet at home and never come back to school to continue with studies for that particular day. The situation also contributed to high dropout rate which the school have been experiencing in the past years, there by increasing illiterate rate in the area.

The Salvation Army through WASH project constructed VIP standard toilets at Kasisis primary school, one structure for boys and another forgirls. The toilets for boys have 4 room with urinal and one room having disability friendly facilitiesandtoilet for girls have 5 rooms with one room having disability friendly facilities and another room have menstrual management
