Between 4 and 21 July 2026, 10,822 Malawian returnees were profiled at the Mwanza Reception Centre. When asked what they need most, 83% said start-up capital.

What's notable is that many of these returnees already have skills. They bring experience in farming, retail and business management, tailoring and design, and construction. According to the data, capital is what will help returnees put that experience to work.

83% of Malawians returning from South Africa intend to stay in Malawi permanently, while 13% are considering returning to South Africa and 4% remain undecided.

For most returnees, coming home reflects a longer-term decision about where to live, work and build their future.

This creates an opportunity for Malawi to better use the skills, experience and networks that returnees bring, while creating an environment where they can contribute to the economy.

Young people need spaces where they can learn, ask questions, share ideas and take part in conversations that matter.

We are committed to creating such spaces, and our upcoming Poultry Webinar is one example. We are bringing together experts, farmers and young people to discuss the opportunities, challenges and future of poultry across the SADC region.

We believe that such conversations can open doors, spark ideas and help young people see the opportunities.

When returnees from South Africa come home, where do they settle?

The data shows that Mangochi accounts for 34% of returnees, slightly more than one in three. Machinga (9%), Nsanje (8%), and Salima (6%) follow, with Thyolo, Balaka, Nkhotakota, and Zomba each accounting for a smaller share.

The concentration in Mangochi is significant. Family ties, established networks, and access to livelihoods are likely contributing factors.

Understanding where returnees settle helps identify where support and opportunity are most needed.

What do you think is driving this concentration in Mangochi?

70% of what it costs to run poultry production goes straight to feed.

That's the reality across Southern Africa's poultry sector. When maize and soya prices rise, feed costs rise, and many producers have little cushion against that volatility.

Part of the problem: fragmented value chains, poor coordination, and not enough investment in maize and soya production. It all adds up to a sector that's vulnerable every time prices move.

This is also where opportunity sits. Feed is one of the biggest openings for young people to step into the poultry value chain.

Join us on 28 August to explore this and more.
