Name a more iconic duo than water and digital solutions. We’ll wait. - Mobile money is a game changer when it comes to revenue collection, while Internet of Things (IoT) devices allow to monitor water services and automate processes. The result? A boost in sustainable water access in low income countries such as Malawi. 💧📈
IoT devices such as the water dispenser you see in this picture enable pay-as-you-go service models. For customers, it’s now as easy as tapping their token to the device. Water comes out, their account is charged and meanwhile, the service provider gets a crystal-clear picture of who uses what, when and where. Pretty neat, right?

Malawi & water, what’s the situation? 💧
One in three does not have access to clean water.
Only 77% of all water points are functional at any given time.
Increasing access to water can change everything. The effects ripple through communities, positively impacting health, prosperity and opportunities. Especially women and girls benefit, since they are usually the ones fetching water in rural communities.
At vula, we’re not only hoping to increase access to water, but we aim to make water supply more sustainable. How? More on that very soon...

Hi there! We’re popping on your feed today to tell you a little something about the Global Goals. Did you know that this week is ? All the more reason to shed a little light on them! 🗣️
In 2015, world leaders agreed on 17 Global Goals, officially known as Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. In short, they are a call for action aimed at all countries worldwide. As the put it:
“They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth - all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”
Here at vula, we’re determined to contribute towards goal number 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Since all SDGs are connected, any contribution causes a ripple effect through multiple goals. If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the SDGs, make sure to check out

Mzuzu… Wait, what? 🤔 Chances are you’ve never heard of our lovely town if you have never been to Malawi (or even if you have, not judging 😉). Malawi is a beautiful stretch of land nestled in between Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania. It’s divided into three parts; North, Central and South, with Mzuzu situated in Northern Malawi.
So, how on earth did you get there, you may ask? In 2019, Johan was part of a traineeship with the Young Expert Programmes. He worked for an NGO called , which is situated in, you guessed it - Mzuzu! Although the traineeship finished after 2 years, Johan wasn’t quite finished with Malawi just yet. Seeing the importance of water access first hand, the idea of vula originated.
More details on why water access is so important will come soon, so make sure to give us a follow if you’d like to learn more! 🤓💧
