Mzuzu University (MZUNI) Vice-Chancellor Professor Wales Singini led members of staff and students in a tree-planting exercise on Friday, 16th February, 2024, at Choma, Mzuzu.
Professor Singini said tree-planting is an annual outreach activity to motivate the communities around MZUNI to embrace the initiative.
"As an institution of higher learning, we contribute to the community in various ways. Tree-planting is an important activity considering the many benefits of trees. We share knowledge with the communities so that we walk together in developing our country," he said.
President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, who is the Chancellor of Mzuzu University, launched the 2023-2024 Annual Forestry Season at Mpasa Hill in Phalombe district on January 18, 2024, under the theme: Forest Innovation in Action: Reforestation for a Sustainable Tomorrow.
During the launch, President Chakwera encouraged communities to work together with the government in restoring the environment to combat climate change and curb its impact.

The Mzuzu University Trust Fund last Saturday treated orphans and vulnerable kids at Walusungu CBO to an early Christmas lunch. This was rare gathering organised by the Trust Fund as an early Christmas Lunch for the boys and girls who also received various items such as toys, clothes and shoes donated by MZUNI employees and AG Capitals.
When Mzuzu University Vice-Chancellor Professor Wales Singini who was the Guest of Honour stood up to address the young boys and girls at the Orphanage, the excitement among the young learners was noticeable. It was therefore not surprising that when Professor Singini told them that someday they will grow up and occupy positions of responsibility, in unison they nodded in agreement. The Vice Chancellor further reiterated that such little steps need support for their dreams to become true; that is why MZUNI’s visit on Saturday was significant.

The orphanage is managed by elderly women, mostly widows, who have volunteered to provide basic needs for orphans within and around Katawa and Chasefu in Mzuzu. The Orphanage, established in 2007, caters for 80 orphans and vulnerable children aged between 2 and 17.

MZUNI Trust Fund exists to mobilise resources to enable MZUNI to operate smoothly and supplement Government funding. MZUNI’s mission is to provide high quality education, training, research, and complementary services in Malawi and the World through pursuit of outstanding achievements in learning, discovery and community engagement.

Mzuzu University (MZUNI) was modelled on the principle that it should be selfsustaining and less dependent on the Government budget. Accordingly, the Mzuzu
University Act (1997) entrenched the establishment of the Mzuzu University Trust
and the creation of a Board of Trustees in Section 13 of the Act. The Trust was
endorsed by the Government of Malawi through a Trust Deed of May 5, 1998. It is
a legal mechanism through which Mzuzu University can enter into business
and commercial dealings and transactions with both the public and private sectors.
