Since graduating in 2023, my journey has been filled with growth, learning, and perseverance. I’ve had the opportunity to attend the Best Diplomats Conference in Dubai, volunteer as a Programs Assistant at Ladder to Learning, intern with the Ministry of Lands, and now work as a Project Officer at The NGO Gender Coordination Network.
It hasn’t always been easy finding my space, and there were times I almost gave up. But one thing I’ve learned is, don’t give up. Keep applying, keep showing up, and take every opportunity that comes your way whether it’s volunteering, internships, conferences, or short courses. Many call it “luck,” but you’ll never find that luck if you don’t put yourself out there. ~

After graduating with a degree in social work, I expected to transition smoothly into the NGO or development sector, especially in roles related to community development, livelihoods and social support programs. I believed my academic knowledge, combined with my passion for working with communities, would quickly open doors to stable and well-defined career opportunities.
I also expected that organizations would provide structured mentorship and that my role would mainly focus on applying what I learned in areas such as community engagement, project implementation and social support services.
However, my experience so far has been somewhat different. The industry has proven to be highly competitive, with many roles requiring not only academic qualifications but also strong practical experience and specific technical skills. This has made career progression slower than I initially expected.That said, my experience working with organizations like the Evangelical Association of Malawi has helped me gain valuable hands-on skills in community mobilization, project coordination, and working with rural communities. I have also learned the importance of flexibility, continuous learning, and adapting to real community needs, which are often more complex than theory suggests. ~

After graduating, I’m really looking forward to stepping into a new phase of independence and growth. I’m excited to start applying what I’ve learned in real life, especially in building a career that connects with my passion for environmental studies. I also look forward to gaining financial freedom, exploring new opportunities, and figuring myself out along the way. At the same time, I feel like I’m at a bit of a crossroads, trying to decide whether to go straight into working or continue my studies with a master’s degree. ~.chatchuka. (Environmental studies)

Model Benjamin Njanji

After, graduated from the Catholic University of Malawi in September 2022 with strong credit in bachelor's degree in Social Sciences with social work major. I started internship in October at the Office of the Ombudsman, headquarters for 4 months and I had to resign since I got another opportunity at Malawi Red Cross Society headquarters where I was working as a youth leader volunteer under Danish Project, Community Resilience Project where my focus was carrying out and coordinating youth activities and youth leaders in Mangochi, Chikwawa, Mwanza and Lilongwe and also opening, revamping both in school and out of school youth clubs where I was conducting Life Skills session and Sexual Reproductive health and Rights facilitation.

Furthermore In may 2023 I had an opportunity to travel to Europe in Denmark for the youth leadership academy together with other youths from Europe, Asia and Africa. During the academy I liked most of having the topic of Psychological First Aid (PFA) Which is one of my inspiration fields as a social worker and of cause meeting with youth from different parts of the world and also experiencing Danish way of living food and the city. As a youth leader in Malawi I was also helping the Malawi Red Cross National Youth president with planning and implementation of National youth activities in Malawi as well as supporting the Branch and Volunteer Specialist, this was from February 2023 to February 2024. But after my 1 year completion of the contract period I had to search for the other opportunities and jobs but I couldn't find any so it was stressing me and I was depressed at home, on the other side I could relive my stress on other activities that I love to do like continuing my leadership and volunteering with Red Cross at Lilongwe Division/ brunch where I was involved in different projects and activities like door to door sensitisation on health issues.

I have also been doing fashion modeling and attending Club meetings and activities for the Rotaract Club. Most importantly I have been going to Church, by the way I am a Catholic and I joined the Young Christian Workers where I associate with my fellow youths. So from March till August 2024 I have been home till I got the interviews and Employed by Malawi Red Cross Society. So in September 2024 I relocated to Blantyre City where I am at Red Cross Blantyre City up-to-date. I am working under the project of DRIMIAA which enables Effective Disaster Risk Management through systems of Interagency Anticipatory Action using a multi-hazard and multi sectoral Approach. And I am working as a Group Cash Transfer Facilitator. And it has been exciting and also challenging as some of the concepts were new to me since they are more of Disaster Risk Management which are a bit different from what I studied, but I love it since it's an opportunity for me to come out of my comfort zone and learn new skills and experiences.
