Moving to Mexico isn’t just about choosing a pretty place to live—it’s about understanding how life actually functions once you get here.

These are four practical lessons we’ve learned that don’t always make the highlight reel, but will absolutely impact your day-to-day.

Book appointments early because things fill up fast, and timelines don’t always move the way you expect.

Understand residency requirements before you make big plans—most processes start outside of Mexico, and missing that step can slow you down.

Prioritize daily essentials when choosing where to live. A beautiful home doesn’t matter if your internet is unreliable or basic errands are inconvenient.

And always check home utilities before signing anything—water pressure, electrical setup, airflow, and overall functionality matter more than aesthetics long-term.

None of this is meant to overwhelm you—it’s meant to help you move smarter so you’re not figuring everything out the hard way after you arrive.

If you want a step-by-step system that walks you through all of this in order, start with the ExitUS Planner: A DIY Guide for Moving to Mexico.

If you want to hear from someone who’s actually worked with us, go watch “Helping New Expats Discover Merida.” 🌹

She started with the ExitUS Planner course (yes, the course includes a free consultation call), and then booked the Mérida City Tour too.

This video is actually from the end of the tour experience, where her friend shared an honest review of what it was like exploring Mérida with us and getting support on the ground during their exploratory trip.

If you want to see the full experience, you can click the YouTube link in our bio.

Okay, let’s settle this real quick. 😄

A. Historic city charm 🏘️
OR
B. Tropical beach days 🏖️

Are you happiest walking colorful streets, finding local cafés, and soaking in the everyday rhythm of a city like Mérida?

Or are you trying to be as close to the water as possible at all times?

Honestly, one of my favorite things about living in Yucatán is that you really can have a little bit of both depending on the season of life you’re in.

So now I need to know:
Are you choosing A or B?

🛑 Stop putting off your RFC! It’s not just about taxes anymore.

Trying to navigate life in Mexico without an RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes) is becoming a major headache.

From opening a bank account to signing up for local services and even certain apps, this "tax ID" is quickly becoming the most essential document for foreigners.

If you’re already here or planning your move, don't wait until you're in a bind to figure this out. I’ve already laid out the groundwork for you!

I explained the entire process in detail over on our YouTube channel "The Rose Herd". Head over and watch it here:

I was recording this video for our own notes while we were looking for a physical location for Our Village MID because when you’re touring places back-to-back, you think you’ll remember… and then you don’t. 😅

But while we were reviewing the footage, I realized it’s also helpful for y’all to see a different side of house hunting in Mérida. In our other videos where we were searching for a home for our family, the homes were bigger and the budget was higher.

These tours show smaller options, and if you’ve been wondering what “lower cost” homes can look like, this is a great one to watch (we share the prices for each place inside the video).

Head over to our YouTube channel and watch “Three House Tours in Merida + The Village Hub Reveal”—the link is in our bio.

When I first started planning our move to Mexico, I kept telling myself I just needed more time to figure things out.

And yes, I was researching.
And yes, I had lists.
And yes, I felt “busy” with it.

But I wasn’t actually making decisions. Everything started to shift when I picked one thing and decided on it. That gave the rest of the plan somewhere to go.

What is your #1 priority for moving abroad?

A) Location
B) Budget
C) Timeline
D) Housing

If you’ve started planning your move to Mexico but you still feel like you’re spinning, it’s usually because a few key decisions are still “open loops.” Not because you’re behind, but because your brain won’t let you move forward without clarity.

Here are three decisions that make everything else easier once they’re locked in:

1️⃣ Decide your non-negotiables (what you must have in your day-to-day budget range, walkability vs car, beach vs city access, family needs, whatever matters for your real life).

2️⃣ Decide your move style (are you doing suitcases only, bringing key items, or shipping because this affects timelines, costs, and what you need to do next).

3️⃣ Decide your first 30-day plan (where you’ll stay, how you’ll handle basics like phone/internet/transportation, and what “settled” looks like for Month 1).

Save this and choose ONE of the three decisions to make this week.

If you’ve been wondering what everyday life actually looks like just outside Mérida, this is one of those real-time snapshots.

This vlog takes you into Cholul, where things are growing fast, but still feel very local.

We’re sharing:
– Progress on our construction (and what’s changed since the last update)
– How the area itself is developing
– And a local event we got to experience, a torneo de lazo

If you’re thinking about making a move, this kind of context helps you picture what your day-to-day could look like.

Hey y’all! I’m going LIVE next Sunday, May 17th, and we’re just gonna have a real conversation about moving to Mexico, life in Mérida, planning timelines, and honestly… whatever questions y’all have. 😄

Exploratory trip season is starting to pick up, and I know a lot of people are trying to figure out where to start, what to prioritize, and what real life here actually looks like outside of the curated social media version.

So let’s talk about it.

No fluff. No fantasy version. Just an honest conversation from somebody who’s actually living it day to day. 🌹

If you’re planning a move and your brain feels like 47 tabs, 12 screenshots, and five half-finished checklists… you don’t need more information.

You need one starter system that connects the dots. Here’s what that system is:

1) Timeline (when are you moving—real month/year)
2) Budget (first-month range + moving costs)
3) Inventory (bring vs buy vs ship)

When those three are clear, everything else gets easier: your city choice gets smarter, your housing search gets faster, and your shipping decisions stop being guesses.

The ExitUS Planner is a DIY guide that walks you through the actual process, so you’re not stuck piecing it together from 20 different sources. 🔗
