U.S. AND MEXICO NOW REQUIRE SCREWWORM CERTIFICATES FOR DOGS

New World screwworm documentation is now required when crossing the border in either direction.

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES → MEXICO

Effective August 3, 2026, Mexico requires New World screwworm inspection documentation for pet dogs and pet birds traveling from the United States.

For dogs, the documentation must confirm that the animal:

• Was inspected by a USDA-accredited veterinarian
• Was examined within 5 days before entering Mexico
• Is free of screwworm infestation
• Has no untreated wounds that could contain screwworm larvae

SENASICA personnel can also physically inspect the animal at the Mexican port of entry.

⚠️ We have received confirmation from clients whose dogs were denied entry into Mexico because their documentation did not comply with the new requirements.

Do not rely on inconsistent enforcement or assume that documentation will not be requested at your crossing.

Official USDA requirements for entering Mexico:

Official SENASICA pet-entry information:

🇲🇽 MEXICO → UNITED STATES

Dogs entering or returning to the United States from Mexico must also have screwworm-freedom certification.

The dog must:

• Be inspected within 5 days before entering the United States
• Be certified free of screwworm infestation
• Have documentation issued by an authorized veterinarian in Mexico

For dogs traveling from Mexico, the certification can be issued by a clinical veterinarian trained and authorized to sign on behalf of Mexico’s official government veterinarian.

Official USDA requirements for dogs entering the United States:

Dogs must also comply with separate CDC entry requirements:

⚠️ SHORT TRIPS CAN REQUIRE TWO INSPECTIONS

The document issued in the United States for entry into Mexico does not automatically satisfy the requirements for returning to the United States.

Even on a short trip, travelers can need:

1. An inspection and document issued in the United States before entering Mexico; and
2. Another inspection and certification issued in Mexico before returning to the United States.

🐈 WHAT ABOUT CATS?

Cats are not included in Mexico’s new screwworm-document requirement announced for pet dogs and pet birds.

Cats can still be physically inspected by SENASICA upon arrival and should be healthy and free of fresh or untreated wounds.

Requirements can change quickly. Confirm the official rules before every trip and make sure your veterinarian uses the correct documentation for the country you are entering.

Better Informed. Better Protected.

✈️ Mexican Residents Flying? Know Your Rights. ⚠️

Even though VOLARIS has been at the center of attention in regard to their shady DNR tax application for Mexican Residents. It’s a good idea to know how to follow-up with when an airline doesn’t comply. ⚠️

If you are a Temporary or Permanent Resident of Mexico, you may be exempt from paying the DNR (Non-Resident/Tourist Tax) on eligible flights into Mexico. If you were charged anyway and the airline will not refund it, you can file a complaint with the appropriate government agency.

🇺🇸 U.S. Residents:
File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation:
U.S. DOT Air Consumer Complaint Form (Check Comments for 🇺🇸 Link 🔗)

🇨🇦 Canadian Residents:
File a complaint with the Canadian Transportation Agency:
Canadian Air Travel Complaints Portal: (Check Comments for 🇨🇦 Link 🔗)

Keep copies of:
• Your Temporary or Permanent Resident Card (front & back)
• Your booking confirmation and itinerary
• Any emails or correspondence with the airline

A formal government complaint often receives much faster attention than repeated requests through airline customer service. Always try the airline first, but if you reach a dead end, these complaint portals are valuable resources.

Three drops of rain in Mexico and suddenly we’re all this hamster… 😆 😆 😆

Jokes aside, rainy season can create very real delays. A perfectly planned day can change in minutes because of flooded roads, fallen trees, power outages, or internet disruptions.

☔️ Things That Can Delay Your Appointment in Mexico (That Nobody Can Control)

• Heavy rain
• Flooded roads
• Fallen trees
• Mudslides
• Road closures
• Power outages
• Internet outages
• Cell service interruptions

If you work with government offices, service providers, or local businesses, remember that these aren’t EXCUSES—they’re simply part of life during Mexico’s rainy season.

The best plan is to allow extra time, expect the unexpected, and extend a little PATIENCE. Mother Nature doesn’t check anyone’s calendar before changing the day’s plans.
