OTTAWA AND B.C. JOIN FORCES ON HOUSING! A massive multi-billion dollar affordability plan has just been announced in Vancouver.
A massive policy shift is coming to British Columbia's housing market. Prime Minister Mark Carney joined Premier David Eby in Vancouver to announce a sweeping federal-provincial framework targeting housing supply, development costs, and public transit infrastructure.
The core of the strategy? Cutting the upfront costs of building. Ottawa is committing $1.6 billion over 10 years to lower development charges specifically for multi-unit housing—a move B.C. is expected to match dollar-for-dollar.
In a highly discussed move, the plan also includes an aggressive mandate to convert more than 2,200 vacant condo units directly into affordable homes. Pair that with a joint $2.5 billion fund over the next decade for transit expansion and improved service, and the government is making a clear bet on high-density, transit-oriented communities.
While supporters view this as a vital step to lower the entry barrier for homebuilders and renters, critics are already raising questions about how quickly these funds will translate into actual construction and how vacancy conversions will be managed.
