Besides the clouded tigrina, we were able to record other important species in our survey in west Panama. Species detected were the Central American puma and tapir, plus melanic tayras, and brocket deer!

One of the least known small cat species in the American continent is the Clouded Tiger Cat or Clouded Tigrina (Leopardus pardinoides) that habits high altitud sierras (over 2000 m high) of Costa Rica and Panama. It's populations are separated from other tigrina species by geographical barriers such as "El Darien", and anatomically is different, being smaller, with diferent spotting patterns (some present melanism), and with a shorter tail. Researchers, Dr. Arturo Caso (Predator Conservation A.C.) and Jörn Ziegler (F.A.W.N.) started a project in west Panama in late 2025, where they were able to videograph this elusive species. To date, researchers are in the process to calculate the denisty of this endangered cat in the study area! We want to thank Kaminando organization and Mi Ambiente (Panameñan government) for providing the necesary permits and also to local Panamenian biologists and rangers who helped us in the field!

The Hoatzin (Ophistocomus hoazin) is Guyana's national bird and, it is a very strange but interesting bird! It lives in the swamps and riparian habitats of the Amazon and it's digestive system is similar to ruminant mammals, because it just eats certain kind of leaves and needs this kind bacterial process to digest its food!

After ten days of field work at Atawa station, our wildlife expedition is over! But we had the oportunity to watch many different and interesting species, including a sloth (swiming), a jabiru, caimans, white lipped pecary, a cocoi heron, and a giant otter (far)!.
