How to calculate the Earthquake’s Epicenter

The energy liberated in an earthquake is caused by the sudden breaking and movement of tectonic plates.

Reading the seismogram:
- Primary (P)waves arrive first to the observation station, also known as seismograph,
- Secondary (S) waves arrive later,
- P and S waves are generated at the same time at the same location
- The difference in time between the S and P wave arrive gives the distance to the epicenter.
- It is needed at least 3 seismic stations at strategical locations to find the epicenter.

Calculando el Epicentro de un terremoto

La energía liberada por un terremoto es causada por el rompimiento y movimiento súbito de las placas tectónicas.

Como leer un sismograma:
- Las ondas primarias (P) llegan primero a la estación de observación, conocida como sismógrafo,
- Las ondas Secundarias (S) llegan después.
- Tanto las ondas P y ondas S se generan al mismo tiempo en la misma posición,
- La diferencia entre el tiempo de arribo de las ondas S y P nos dan la distancia aproximada del epicentro.
- Se necesitan por lo menos 3 estaciones sismográficas ubicadas estratégicamente para calcular el epicentro.
