Important information for the local and expat community in Yucatán! Please share!

⚠️ The coastal dunes that protect Yucatán’s shoreline are under threat from a real estate development project called “Las Dunas.”

🧐 The project plans to develop more than 92,000 square meters to build apartment buildings, parking lots, commercial areas, roads, and other amenities.

🐢 The problem is that the site is located within a protected conservation area that is home to protected species and serves as a nesting ground for sea turtles.

👉 Residents and local organizations allege that construction may already be taking place on coastal dunes and sea turtle nesting areas.

📝 If the project has been authorized, SEMARNAT must explain how it approved a development of this scale in such a fragile ecosystem and what measures are in place to prevent irreversible environmental damage.

🌪️ Coastal dunes are not just piles of sand. They protect communities from hurricanes, storms, and coastal erosion. They also help maintain beaches and provide essential habitat for countless species.

💥 It is not enough to promise green spaces or plant a few trees within the development. Once a dune is destroyed, it cannot be replaced with landscaping.

🔎 That is why citizens are calling on SEMARNAT, PROFEPA, the Government of Yucatán, and the Municipality of Progreso to inspect the project and make all permits, environmental impact studies, and protection measures publicly available.

❗️This is not about opposing development. It is about preventing a real estate project from destroying an ecosystem that protects the entire community.

👉 Yucatán’s coastal dunes need protection now—before it is too late.
