Hemos recibido la siguiente solicitud por parte de nuestros colegas y organizaciones sanitarias en San Diego. Se solicitan intérpretes voluntarios para apoyar esfuerzos binacionales para capacitar mejor a los médicos que trabajan con pacientes de COVID-19 en el Hospital General de Tijuana. Sería presencial en el hospital y se brindará equipo de protección personal (EPP). Copio y pego el texto que recibimos a continuación. Tijuana is being hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 epidemic, with more reported deaths to date than San Diego and with a higher per capita death rate than Mexico City. Heath care facilities there, particularly ones that serve the indigent, are under severe stress.
Several SD physicians and nurses made two trips to visit Tijuana General Hospital a few weeks ago and met with physicians and nurses there. Most physicians caring for ventilated patients have not had formal training in ventilator management and they are very interested in working collaboratively with San Diego medical staff/ language access professionals to improve outcomes for their ventilated patients.
Since Monday May 18th, we have been sending physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists (and a medical interpreter if neither of them speaks fluent Spanish) to make daily rounds on ventilated COVID-19 patients from 0830-1130 in Tijuana General Hospital. The team will meet at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, walk across the border or carpool, and be met by members of the Tijuana Cruz Roja (Red Cross), who will convey them to Tijuana General Hospital. Cruz Roja personnel will return them to the border after rounds. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to all individuals involved. We have shifts from 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM every day, including Saturday and Sunday. You do not need to volunteer all week, only when you can.
Please keep in mind that interpreters are allowed to bring their note pads and medical terminology. The goal is to support and train Mexican providers so they can improve outcomes on their own but this will be a month or two month effort. You can choose to help as many or little days as you wish.
