Reporting changes at INM

INM requires temporary and permanent residents to report certain changes in your status. If:

-you moved and changed address

-you changed nationality

-you changed your marital status

-you changed your name

-you changed your place of work

You are expected to report the change within 90 days...if you go past the 90 days INM applies a late reporting fine of between 2200 and 11300 pesos.

You cannot simply go online to make the change. Like most other types of filings you create the paperwork on the INM website, make an appointment online, and file the paperwork in person (or have your legal representative or gestor do it for you). Some INM offices around Mexico take walk-ins without appointment.

Canje Airport Procedure

When you arrive at the airport in Mexico, always go to a human immigration officer. Do not use the machines or kiosks. Even if the line is long, stay in the line that leads to a real person at a desk.

Don’t throw away all the hard work you’ve already done.

Please see a human when you fly in for a CANJE. 2 different couples were turned away today here in GDL. Don't let all the hard work you've done in your home country go to waste. I'm here to help..drop me a line if you have any questions.

As we step into a new year, I want to take a moment to wish a Happy New Year to past clients, current clients, and those who may just be starting their residency journey.

Thank you for the trust, patience, and conversations throughout the year. Helping people navigate the Mexican immigration process continues to be work I value deeply.

With the start of the new year, it’s important to note that INM fees have increased, as they typically do annually. This affects several immigration procedures, including residency-related processes.

While the rules themselves may not always change, costs and enforcement often do, which is why staying informed — and planning ahead — matters.

If you’re preparing to start a process, continue one, or simply want to understand how the new fees may affect your timeline, clarity at the beginning can save stress later.

Wishing everyone a smooth, successful, and well-prepared year ahead.

Helping expats navigate Mexican residency with clarity

I keep seeing the same misunderstanding come up, so here’s a clarification specific to GDL for people who already have their visa.

There’s been a noticeable increase in people coming to Guadalajara after being issued a visa at a Mexican consulate, assuming the INM step will be straightforward or the same everywhere.

National INM rules are real — but local offices interpret and apply them differently. Guadalajara is one of them.

Preparing for “Mexico INM” and preparing for INM Guadalajara are not the same thing, even if you already have your visa approved.

Not advice — just sharing experience so people don’t lose time or end up making multiple trips.

As 2025 comes to a close, one pattern has shown up again and again:

Most residency problems didn’t come from the rules —
they came from confusion between steps.

This year I saw:
• People paying twice because they hired help for the wrong stage
• CANJE delays caused by choosing the wrong INM office
• Missed appointments over small but critical details
• Stress that could’ve been avoided with clearer guidance upfront

Almost every situation could have been simplified by answering one question first:
👉 Which step of the process are you actually in?

That question alone solved more issues in 2025 than anything else.

The INM has officially announced that all immigration offices nationwide will be closed from December 22 through January 1, 2026.

As is often the case, the notice was posted after it had already begun affecting appointments and processes.

Welcome to holiday bureaucracy, Mexico-style. 🎄🛃

👋 Quick clarity for anyone navigating Mexican residency…

One of the biggest issues I see is simple:
👉 People don’t realize the residency process has three separate stages, and they ask for help in the wrong place.

Understanding this upfront saves time, money, and frustration.

🇲🇽 THE 3 STEPS TO MEXICAN RESIDENCY

1️⃣ Document Preparation
This includes economic solvency, civil documents, translations, and making sure everything aligns before you apply.
✅ Some professionals focus only on this step.

2️⃣ Consulate Appointment (Outside Mexico)
This step involves:
• Booking the appointment
• Preparing documents correctly
• Knowing what to expect during the interview

✅ Some professionals help with scheduling and interview prep.

🚨 Important:
Consulate prep can be done from anywhere — location does not matter at this stage.

⬇️ Once approved, you receive your visa sticker ⬇️
Now the process continues inside Mexico.

3️⃣ CANJE (Visa Exchange at INM)
This is where the visa is exchanged for your resident card.

Before asking for help, you should know:
📍 Where you’ll complete your CANJE
👤 Whether you want in-person support
💻 Or if virtual guidance is enough

Most residency questions I receive start with this exact breakdown.
Once people know which step they’re in, everything else becomes much clearer.
