Sometimes, going back to basics is the best way to move forward.

We were delighted to conduct "𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬 - 𝐅&𝐁 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬" for the Team at 𝐎𝐂𝐁𝐂 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤, in collaboration with 𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐊 𝐇𝐑 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲.

The programme was built around four essential pillars:

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗲-𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲.

One question I often ask hospitality and F&B leaders is:
"𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭, 𝐬𝐢𝐱 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐰?"

The answer is rarely... "Attend another training program"

Instead, I hear things like:

• "𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞."

• "𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬."
• "𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞."

That's when I know the conversation isn't really about training. It's about 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞.

One belief has remained constant throughout my career, exceptional guest experiences don't happen by chance. They are created by teams that 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲, 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡, 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐲.

It's a conversation I've had many times over the years.

The issue wasn't the training.
The issue was that everyone expected 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 that had been built over months or even years.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.
𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 happens when leaders 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝.

Too often, we treat 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 as opposing ideas. Yet, in my experience, especially in hospitality - they are inseparable.

𝗔 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 creates a vision, builds trust and inspires people to achieve something greater. 𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 transforms that vision into reality through planning, communication, coaching, accountability, decision-making and disciplined ex*****on.

Over the years, I've seen inspiring leaders struggle because they lacked the management skills to bring their vision to life. I've also seen highly capable managers consistently deliver results but miss the opportunity to truly engage, develop and inspire their teams.

In fact, 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀. I could manage operations and consistently deliver results, but I hadn't yet learned how to truly inspire, coach and develop people. It took years of experience for me to realize that management drives performance, but leadership brings out the best in people. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆.

𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧. 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡.

𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Our guests don't see our meetings, strategies or organizational charts - they experience the outcome.

They remember 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙙.
How 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙙.
How 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧.

That level of consistency doesn't happen by chance. It is built every day by professionals who 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.

Perhaps the conversation shouldn't be 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘃𝘀. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Perhaps it should be 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

The real question is:
𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵?

I had the privilege of attending the 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗪𝗜𝗡 3-day program with 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 from 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 - an engaging and inspiring learning experience from start to finish.
