How can Malaysia accelerate its space economy and ensure it becomes a strategic contributor to national development?
This was among the key themes discussed during the MINDA Policy Roundtable: *Strengthening Malaysia's Space Economy: From Vision to Action* at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), bringing together stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and the security sector to explore the future of Malaysia's space ecosystem.
Representing the Malaysian Space Industry Consortium (MASIC), our President, Dato' Kamarul Redzuan Muhamed, emphasized that while the global space economy continues to grow rapidly, Malaysia must strengthen its domestic ecosystem through greater awareness, investment, and participation across all sectors.
A key takeaway from the session was the need to enhance space economy literacy among policymakers, financial institutions, investors, industry leaders, and the public. Space should no longer be viewed solely as a scientific endeavour, but as a strategic economic asset that supports national development, economic resilience, technological advancement, and security.
Malaysia's future competitiveness will increasingly depend on its ability to develop sovereign capabilities in space technologies, satellite-enabled services, and data infrastructure. Strengthening data sovereignty and technological sovereignty through local talent, innovation, and industry participation will be critical to ensuring that Malaysia remains competitive in an increasingly space-enabled global economy.
The conversation also underscored the importance of stronger collaboration between government, industry, academia, and funding institutions to unlock investment opportunities, support emerging space companies, and accelerate commercialization within the sector.
As Malaysia advances its national space agenda, a whole-of-nation approach will be essential to position the country as a capable regional player and to fully realise the economic, technological, and strategic benefits of the space sector.
We thank MINDA UKM and UKM for providing this important platform for dialogue and look forward to continued collaboration in advancing Malaysia's space economy and national space aspirations.
