Welcome to our weekly short-burst blog, where we offer advice on how to become wiser.
This week we are discussing how to be more vigilant when it comes to AI scams.
To begin, identifying what is AI, and what is not, can be challenging.
As it stands, AI forensics, the method of separating AI from the real, can be troublesome, made all the more difficult when everybody has access to a multitude of different AI platforms.
So what can we do?
Firstly, apply the same method of thought you would any would-be scam. If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. Next, as content consumers, it will be best to minimize sharing content that does not come from a well regarded or official source.
Also, it will be prudent to go to these AI content pages, and see, what they look like, their style, the way people speak in it, the method in which it is animated, drawn and acted because AI, despite being highly advanced, do have “tells”.
For example, certain styles of AI are so prevalent that people with even the most basic grasp of AI, can point and say “yeah, that looks like AI.”
Another good way of hardening yourself against AI scams is to read up about AI in general. A bit of knowledge goes a long way.
And finally, we know there are many AI detectors out there, whether it be scanning through documents, or pictures, don’t take them as gospel. They are not wholly accurate and using them as your crutch can be dangerous in different ways.
One such case is if you are a teacher, and use an AI detection program to analyse the work of a student. The program can say this student used AI but the student says they didn’t and was only detected because of the gathered research.
Research, do the work yourself, use common sense, the old methods of rooting out scams still hold true even with AI.
And just so you know, this article was not written in AI.
Or maybe it was, who are you to know?
