WAF’26 AWARD-WINNING SERIES :
LOCAL IDENTITY, ARCHITECTURAL VISION : 3 PENANG VOICES

PAMNC held the 1st event of World Architecture Festival 2026 on 3rd October. Three distinguished PAM Award-winning Penang architects shared their creative journeys and vision for local architecture.

The event opened with Ar. Francis Tang giving a warm welcoming speech.
A presentation from Wiitrac delivered an informative presentation on their innovative vertical mobility and elevator solutions.

Ar. Ho Chin Keng from CKHo Architect is driven by the belief that Malaysian architecture possesses potential for creative exploration. He advocates for starting practice early to test design processes without being constrained by rigid architectural norms. He shared about Piccadilly Bazaar, Heritage Rice Mill Relocation, which are about salvaging existing materials for adaptive reuse. CKHO Architect

EA Architects’ Ar. Liou Hung Woei then presented the Building of the Year – Astana Kota Selera, a civic venue at Padang Kota Lama connecting local culinary heritage, public life, and the historic Fort Cornwallis. Ar. Liou showed how the humble building fits into the context and invigorate the public spaces. Mr. Kevin Ooi from EA Architects’ continued the presentation with Rice Miller Hotel (interior design) that incorporates historic godowns and rice storage motifs into a modern luxury experience. Ar. Mei Chee Seong (aLM & Partners Sdn. Bhd.) focuses on context-driven, experimental design that balances local context with global trends. His work has evolved into "Timescaping"—curating experiences and bridging heritage, people, and spatial storytelling. He encourages the younger generation to reach out and work together collectively to establish our unique Penang architecture. aLM Architects

Q&A session took place with Ar. Grace Teoh as the moderator. A hail of questions from the floor sparked interesting exchanges between the speakers and the audience.

PAM CPD SEMINAR: ARCHITECTS, SEE YOU IN COURT…. OR IN THE FOOD COURT?! (AFTERNOON SESSION)

After a networking lunch, the afternoon shifted focus toward proactive project administration and resolution:

Ar. David Teoh Wui Leng (Honorary Secretary of PAM 2026–2027):
Since 2025, Ar. David has led the PAM Working Group on Safety & Health and the development of the PAM Framework for CDM 2024. In this session, he presented in-depth information into the framework, equipping the audience with knowledge and understanding the roles and responsibilities of architects in regard to CDM 2024.

Afternoon Fireside Chat took place with an intimate panel session featuring Ar. David Teoh Wui Leng, Ar. Anthony Lee Tee, and Mr. Daniel Tan Wee Xian, diving deep into audience questions on handling on-site disputes, practical risk management, and staying out of the courtroom. We also had a hail of of questions from the floor, thank you to our audience and speakers for such engaging discussion!

The day concluded with an engaging product education session presented by PGF Insulation, highlighting modern thermal and acoustic insulation solutions for built environments.

PAM CPD SEMINAR: ARCHITECTS, SEE YOU IN COURT…. OR IN THE FOOD COURT?! (MORNING SESSION)

Building on the foundation of Dato' Anand Ponnudurai’s 2025 keynote, the 3rd episode of PAM Northern Chapter’s ‘See You in Court’ series moved from theory straight to the frontline!

With increasing statutory, contractual, and professional risks facing architects daily, this session presented how everyday issues—from certification and documentation to building defects, can quickly turn into costly disputes.

The morning kickstarted with an opening welcome from PAMNC and an insightful technical presentation by sponsor Sika Kimia on specialized flooring systems.

The core legal and technical insights were then unfolded by the following speakers:

Dato’ Mary Lim Thiam Suan, President of the AIAC Court of Arbitration & former Federal Court Judge, delivered an authoritative judicial perspective on dispute resolution in the built environment, highlighting the critical intersection between legal accountability and architectural practice.

Ar. Anthony Lee Tee, a Building Defects Expert from Architect Centre Sdn Bhd, shared real-world cases on construction defects, safety, and building diagnostics, highlighting where architectural practice meets post-occupancy risk.

Mr. Daniel Tan Wee Xian, a Case Counsel & Head of PAM ADR Secretariat / PAM Group Legal Adviser, guided participants through the mechanics of dispute resolution. He provided critical insights into PAM's Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) framework, legal safeguards, and how architects can mitigate contractual exposures early.

Mr. Austen Emmanuel Pereira, an Advocate & Solicitor, Partner at Messrs RDS Partnership, drew on deep experience in construction and civil litigation. He analysed legal claims, liability pitfalls, and key contractual minefields that architects must avoid during project ex*****on.

The morning session concluded with a fireside chat. It was a dynamic, multi-perspective discussion bringing together judicial, legal and technical expertise.

Songkittipakdee are acclaimed architects, educators, and the founders and principal architects of the award-winning Thai practice Jenchieh Hung + Kulthida Songkittipakdee / HAS design and research (HAS). Widely recognized as one of Thailand’s leading architectural firms and among the most influential and innovative practices in Asia, HAS is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, local culture, and context-sensitive design. Through a body of work spanning Thailand and the international arena, HAS have established themselves as influential voices in contemporary architecture. Their practice navigates diverse cultural, social, and environmental contexts, producing architecture that bridges local identity with global discourse.

Their work has received numerous international honors, including the Chicago Athenaeum Museum’s International Architecture Awards (United States), the Créateurs Design Awards (France), the INDE. Awards (Australia), the Wallpaper* Architects’ Directory (United Kingdom), the Thailand Prestige Award, and many others. Both are members of the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (ASA). Since 2023, Jenchieh Hung has served as exhibition chairman and principal curator of ASA Thailand and has curated the Infinity Ground Architecture Exhibition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) and the Collective Language: Asian Contemporary Architecture Exhibition at the IMPACT Arena Exhibition and Convention Center. Organized in collaboration with the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA), the latter is recognized as the world’s first large-scale exhibition dedicated to contemporary Asian architecture.

Professor Jenchieh Hung and Professor Kulthida Songkittipakdee serve as honorary professors, distinguished professors, visiting professors, adjunct professors, and design critics in architecture at leading institutions, including Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering, Tongji University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Chulalongkorn University, and the World University of Design. Through their academic platform - HAS Lab, they explore the concept of “Patterns” and investigate pattern formation as a design methodology for generating architectural and urban spatial systems, advancing new approaches to architecture and urbanism through research, experimentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

STEVEN LIM – STEVEN LIM ARCHITECTS (Indonesia)

Steven Lim is the Principal Architect at Steven Lim Architects in Tangerang, Indonesia. In this role, which he has held since August 2020, he specializes in residential projects, driven by a commitment to efficiency, meticulous technical detailing, and optimizing spatial design for the end-user.

Since establishing his practice in 2020, he has successfully delivered over 80 residential projects across Indonesia, overseeing the design process from concept to completion. He currently leads a multidisciplinary team overseeing active construction sites in Jakarta and Tangerang.

A top academic graduate holding both a Bachelor and Master of Architecture from Tarumanagara University in Jakarta, Steven seamlessly bridges the gap between theory and practice. While pursuing his Master’s degree in Architecture, he published the article “Strategy for Enhancing the Function and Green Open Spaces in the Dense Marga Jaya Street Area, Tangerang”. His recent work continues to earn industry recognition, notably with the ‘KL House Project’ featured in the July 2026 edition of the Jawa Pos HOME publication.
