(Intern Story) Most Accounting Students Ask Where To Work. She Already Knows Who She Wants To Become. 🔍

Audit?
Tax?
Commercial?
Big Four?

Most accounting students graduate first,
then slowly figure out where they want to go.

Amisha Shafika is different.

Before completing her Accountancy degree at UiTM Segamat, she already knows her destination.

She wants to pursue a fast-track PhD and, one day, become a professor specialising in forensic accounting.

When I heard her story, I was impressed.
And honestly, a little emotional.

When I was her age,
I did not have such a clear vision.
I was working in audit while studying ACCA.

My biggest concern was passing the next paper.

I was not planning the next 20 years.
I was just trying to survive the next examination.

That is why I admire Amisha.
She does not only have ambition.
She has direction.

Six months ago, she joined KTP as an Audit & Tax Trainee with almost zero practical industry knowledge.

On her last day, she could confidently handle audit planning and vouching.

She had worked on clients from trading, manufacturing and service industries.

She attended audit software training, tax sessions and our weekly Boss Talks.

She also experienced the other side of KTP life.

Hari Raya celebrations.
Birthday karaoke.
Video production.
And working with our sometimes-serious, sometimes-crazy KTP team.

As a boss, I am happy when an intern learns how to complete an audit assignment.

But I feel even more grateful when an intern leaves KTP with greater confidence in her future.

KTP did not create Amisha’s dream.
She already carried that dream inside her.

One day, if I see the name “Professor Dr. Amisha Shafika” on a university website, I will proudly tell everyone:

“I knew her when she was still doing statutory audit at KTP.”

Thank you, Amisha, for allowing us to become a small chapter in your very big dream.

New joiners always ask me,
“Boss, audit & tax got future or not?”

Got.

But first you need to survive your audit & tax Odyssey. 😂

Client don’t reply.
Account is messing
Deadline coming.
You start questioning your career choice.

Welcome to the industry. 😂

Every partner you see today was once a blur junior holding one audit file and thinking,
“Why got so many problems?”

Growth is possible.
Just that during the growth…

You may not feel like you are growing.
You may feel like you are dying. 😂

But one day you will look back and realise,

the difficult files,
the review notes,
the crazy deadlines,
the difficult clients…

were all part of your Odyssey.

To all our young auditors and tax people,
Happy ending of 2026 peak.

New joiners

Client
Account
Deadline

Welcome to the industry. 😂

手上拿着一份 audit/tax file,

“为什么 so many problems?”

Growth is possible.

Happy ending of 2026 peak season.

Merdeka Video. 😂🇲🇾

开始变成 “our people”..

Final video

KTP newcomers’ first real assignment after joining us.

Shoot a Merdeka Video. 😂🇲🇾

Armed with Jalur Gemilang, tripod, phone, and somehow… one bicycle.

Someone became director.
Someone became cameraman.
Someone acting.

And the most common sentence of the day was,

“Eh, one more time.” 😂

Actually, bonding is very simple.

Do something together.
NG together.
Laugh together.
Finish one small thing together.

When they first joined, everyone was still “new staff”.

After shooting one video together,

slowly become “our people”.

Maybe many years later, they may not remember every audit file or tax computation.

But these first few moments in KTP,
they may still remember.

Final video will be out before 31 August. 🇲🇾

“Boss, Our Industry Got Work-Life Balance Or Not?”

Today during Friday Boss Talk,
one of my new colleagues asked me a very practical question.

“Boss, our industry got work-life balance or not?”

I looked at her.
Then I said,
“Frankly speaking…No.”

😂😂😂

Maybe not the answer a new colleague expects from the boss.

But I rather tell the truth.
Because our profession itself is becoming…
UNBALANCED.

More compliance.
More deadlines.
More law changes.
But fewer people.

And Johor got one additional problem.
Singapore is just across the Causeway.

We train good people.
They become experienced.
Then Singapore says,
“Come.”

😑😑😑

At the same time, fewer students are choosing accounting.

Good accounting personnel are already difficult to find.

Good accountants in the commercial and accounting industry who can think, communicate, understand business and still survive accounting pressure?

Even harder.
But the workload never says,

“Never mind lah. Not enough people. We reduce.”

No.
Tax changes.
SST changes.
E-Invoice changes.
Audit standards change.
MPERS standards change.
AML requirements change.

Sometimes we just finished learning one new rule.
Another update comes.

😂😂😂

So how do we create work-life balance?
Definitely not by telling everybody,
“Work harder.”

There is a limit to working harder.
24 hours is still 24 hours.
We need to change how we work.

For me, AI is part of the answer.

Use AI for repetitive work.
Research.
Extraction.
Drafting.
Checking.
Documentation.

Let accountants spend more time thinking and reviewing.
Less time behaving like human copy-and-paste machines.

We also need AI in training and development.

Today, a junior should not need to wait until the senior is free before learning something.

Ask AI first.
Read.
Understand.
Think.

Then ask the senior a better question.
That changes productivity.

Then there is audit exemption.

If smaller companies genuinely qualify and statutory audit is no longer necessary, our limited audit manpower can focus on work where audit creates greater value.

And finally…

Malaysian Institute of Accountants
I know nowadays big conference one after another.
Very busy.
But please…
give us some update on the new Accountants Act also.

Malaysian Institute of Accountants
After organising hundred of AI webinars and conferences,
MIA staffs still working with the old-school way…

Set a good example first.
then young accountants will also ask,
“Boss, why during conference they talk about AI until macam can fly to the moon, but once back in office, still Excel, email and copy-paste all the way?”

😂😂😂

Because I cannot keep telling young accountants.
"You can do it!"

Every year just keep
Later

“Work like cow first.
One day maybe can live like human

When the profession itself is not balanced.
More work.
Less people.
More rules.

Same old way of working.
That equation will never balance.

PS : Authored by Mr Koh Teck Peng, the group principal, in his personal LinkedIn post.

Work-Life Balance?”

Work-Life Balance?”

“Frankly speaking…

😂😂😂

UNBALANCED.

“Come.”

😑😑😑

“Never mind lah.

Tax change.
SST change.
E-Invoice change.
Audit standard change.
MPERS standard change.
AML requirement change.

😂😂😂

所以,
Work-Life Balance

“Work harder.”

把 AI 用在 repetitive work.
Research.
Extraction.
Drafting.
Checking.
Documentation.

Training & Development.

Audit Exemption.

Malaysian Institute of Accountants.

MIA,

Accountants Act,

Malaysian Institute of Accountants,
AI webinar.
AI conference.

还是用 old-school way…

那是不是应该先 set a good example?

“You can do it!”

🤭

“先 Work like cow.
有一天 maybe,
才可以 live like human.”

More work.
Less people.
More rules.

还是同一套 old way of working.

Speaker.

Senior Manager.

Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, JS-SEZ,
还有 Doing Business in Malaysia 的分享会,
现场有 100++ participants.

Malaysia Tax Compliance.
Opportunities.

Speaking Opportunity.

Speaker?”

Organisation?

Company.

Story.

Arthur.
Arthur.

Opportunity.

Trust,

LinkedIn post,
Event Story.

Event.

Talent Acquisition,

Performance Management.

Performance Review,

Coaching.

Appraisal,

Technology

Human Resource.

Human Relationship.

My Birthday Milk Tea Came With A Spoon!

This week,
my people bought me a milk tea as my birthday present.

First impression.
Very nice packaging.
Nice paper bag.
Nice cup.
Very atas.

I looked at it and thought,
“Wah.”
“My people really know how to choose.”

Then I opened the paper bag.
Inside…
There was a spoon.
I froze.

Milk tea got spoon one meh?
Normally, milk tea comes with a straw.

Something is hiding inside.
I poked the cup.
Nothing happened.

I took one sip.
Wow.

So sweet.
Sweet until I almost wanted to ask whether government should have imposed sugar tax earlier.

Then I looked at the label.
Steamed Extra Thick Taro
Taro

Honestly,
I only eat taro 芋头during Chinese wedding dinners.
After eight courses.
When everyone is already full.

Suddenly, taro 芋头 has upgraded itself.
No longer waiting until the last dish.
Now…
It is the main character inside milk tea.

I looked at the label again.
“Consume within 30 minutes.”
Thirty minutes?

How?
The taro was so thick.
Every sip felt like I was drinking Sarsi with 糯米鸡.

No wonder they gave me a spoon.

This wasn’t milk tea.
This was mashed yam with milk tea.

And yes…
I finished the milk tea with great determination..
The taro also finished.

My birthday…
Almost finished too.
My mouth became sticky
My stomach become bloated

Only my diet plan…
Didn’t survive.

Lastly thank you for my birthday present.
A lasting memory.
😂

My Manager Walked Away From Accountancy

Over the years, many people have joined KTP.

Many have left too.
Some stayed for a few months.
Some stayed for many years.

But if you ask me which manager I still miss today.

The answer is easy ... SQ Chai.

I honestly thought…
She would spend her entire career in accountancy.
I was wrong.

When she first told me she is leaving the industry
I thought she was joking.

She wasn’t.
She had spent years building her career.

From Junior.
To Senior.
To Manager.

She became an ACCA member.
She became an MIA member.
She had everything many young accountants dream of.

Then one day.
She told me she wanted to start a completely different career.

Not audit mananger in another accounting firm.
Not accountant in commercial.

A completely different industry.
I won’t share what it is.
That is her story.

To be honest.
I couldn’t understand it initially

For weeks.
I kept asking myself.
“Why?”

Was it burnout?
Was it audit deadlines?
Was it the long hours?
Was it me?
Was it something I could have done differently?

My accountant brain kept looking for an answer.
Nothing balanced.

Eventually.
I realised.

Maybe I was asking the wrong question.
Instead of asking,
“Why would she leave accounting?”

Perhaps I should have asked,
“What kind of life makes her happy?”
Not everyone defines success the same way.

Today.

We still keep in touch.
Sometimes I send her a simple WhatsApp.
“Still alive and kicking 😜?”

Every reply tells me the same thing.
She sounds happy.
Genuinely happy
And that makes me happy too.

As her ex-employer,
I celebrate the people who had the courage to start over.

If someone spends years growing with us.
I bet she leave with gratitude.
Finds happiness in a completely different career.

And still smiles when we message each other years later.
I think.
We are both happy.

SQ Chai.
Thank you for everything you contributed to KTP.
I sincerely wish you all the happiness in your new journey.
