What looks like a simple layout drawing is actually the result of hundreds of decisions.
I'm pleased to have recently completed a Conceptual Layout Planning project for a Base Oil Blending Plant.
At first glance, it may look like a collection of tanks, buildings, roads, and parking spaces.
But behind every line is a purpose.
Before opening AutoCAD, I didn't start by drawing.
I started by learning.
Since lubricant blending was an industry outside my usual projects, I spent time researching the entire process—from how base oil is received from road tankers, how additives are stored and transferred, how blending takes place, right through to drum filling, warehouse operations, vehicle movement, maintenance access, and future expansion.
Only after understanding how the business works could I begin planning how the facility should work.
That research led to questions such as:
• How can tanker trucks enter, unload, and exit safely without disrupting site traffic?
• Where should the bulk storage tanks be positioned to optimise product flow while maintaining safe separation distances?
• How can forklifts, pedestrians, and heavy vehicles operate efficiently without conflicting with one another?
• Where should blending kettles, transfer pumps, manifolds, utilities, and support facilities be located to minimise piping while remaining accessible for operation and maintenance?
• How can the facility remain efficient today while allowing room for tomorrow's expansion?
Every answer shaped the next decision.
The final layout is more than a drawing.
It is a visual representation of operational workflow, safety considerations, logistics, maintenance planning, constructability, and long-term scalability.
To me, good conceptual planning isn't about placing buildings on a site. It's about understanding how every decision affects the people, the process, and the future of the business.
This project also demonstrates the strength of combining Studio One Design with ProEdge Consultant.
While Studio One Design focuses on transforming ideas into practical and functional layouts, ProEdge Consultant brings the perspective of project consultancy, constructability, regulatory considerations, safety, and implementation planning.
Together, we bridge the gap between concept, compliance, and construction, helping clients make informed decisions before significant investments are made.
I'd like to thank my client for placing their trust in us and allowing us to be part of this exciting venture. I sincerely wish them every success with their business expansion overseas, and I hope this conceptual planning becomes a strong foundation for many successful years ahead.
Because at the end of the day...
Great projects don't begin with drawings.
They begin with understanding the process, asking the right questions, and having the courage to challenge assumptions before the first line is ever drawn.
