📌 Handwritten Bill vs Self-Billed e-Invoice

Many business owners are unsure what to do when a supplier provides only a handwritten bill instead of a validated e-Invoice.

Should you automatically issue a self-billed e-Invoice?
The answer is: Not necessarily.

✅ If the supplier is an SSM-registered sole proprietor or a person carrying on a business, the buyer should not automatically issue a self-billed e-Invoice.

What should you do?

1️⃣ Record it as a normal purchase
2️⃣ Keep the handwritten bill as supporting documentation
3️⃣ Ensure the supplier is still within the transitional period / not yet required to implement e-Invoice

Self-billed e-Invoice applies only to specific categories, such as payments to non-business individuals, commissions to agents/dealers, and imported services.

⚠️ Issuing a self-billed e-Invoice wrongly may create duplicate income records for the supplier in LHDN’s system.

Getting it right from the start helps avoid costly corrections later.
