Iran is reportedly mobilizing more than one million personnel, including both its regular army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), signaling a massive defensive posture against the possibility of a U.S. ground invasion. This unprecedented buildup reflects Tehran’s commitment to a “total defense” strategy, one of the largest in the region’s history.
Military experts emphasize that Iran’s approach centers on asymmetric warfare, leveraging urban environments and rugged mountainous terrain to make any foreign intervention difficult, prolonged, and costly. By dispersing forces across key strategic locations, Iran aims to establish a layered defense network that extends well beyond its major cities.
Meanwhile, the arrival of elite U.S. units, such as the 82nd Airborne, in the Persian Gulf has intensified tensions. A significant portion of Iran’s forces includes the Basij militia, trained for rapid deployment, local resistance, and sabotage—further strengthening its deterrence against a sustained ground offensive.
